The precarious position of treaty-less tribes: What a five-year fight over a few dozen clams shows about the inconsistent rights of Indigenous tribes. At the core of the dispute is a key distinction between the haves and have-nots. In this case, between Indigenous nations that have a treaty with the US government, like the Quinault, and those that do not, like the Cowlitz. Those treaties, often signed more than a century ago, dictate the rights of tribal members to this day. The Cowlitz people, said tribal elder Robin Torner during his testimony in the Simmonses’ trial, have been harvesting and eating razor clams from along Copalis Beach long before the United States existed.

‘Shocking’: EcoHealth Alliance receives another round of funding for coronavirus bat research in Asia: A coalition of leading House Republicans is raising the alarm and demanding answers after the Biden administration approved another round of grant funding for research on coronaviruses and bats in Asia. EcoHealth Alliance is the group that received funding to study bats and coronaviruses via the infamous lab in Wuhan, China.
