Havasupai tribe: Pinion Plain uranium mine threatens our existence: For decades, the Havasupai Tribe has voiced its opposition against the operation of Pinyon Plain, a uranium mine located about 10 miles south of the Grand Canyon.

# Covid / Pandemics / Biologicals
“Disease X”: Prepare For Another Pandemic: More pandemics will appear.
Be prepared. COVID-19 will not be the last new disease to take advantage of modern global conditions. Continued vigilance is vital. Preparation includes enhancing the integration and effectiveness of the public health, healthcare, and emergency management systems through education, supplying adequate provisions, and drills as well as developing incentives (eg, tax credits, identified cost savings) that increase the number of nongovernmental entities engaged in actions that enhance their communities’ health security.

How COVID mRNA Shots Can Cause Diseases: Remedy For COVID Vaccine-Induced Blood Clots?” points out that Dr. Joseph Mercola’s
6/20/22 article “The Latest Tragedy: Sudden Adult Death Syndrome”
explained: “In recent weeks, media outlets around the world have started highlighting a medical phenomenon called “sudden adult death syndrome,”
or SADS, in what appears to be a clear effort to obscure the reality of COVID jab deaths.…”

# Economy / Finance / Trade
Washington’s Sanctions War Kneecaps the West, Not Russia: Washington’s cowardly proxy war against Russia reached a new level of absurdity over the weekend. In a word, ordinary commerce has become so weaponized by Washington that the world’s oldest money can no longer be freely exchanged on international markets.

U.S. Could Be Facing Yearslong Economic Turmoil: “There’s nothing that can bring an economy to its knees more than high inflation [and] high tax rates,” Laffer said during a recent interview.

# Education / Schools
Grocery retailer H-E-B and the family of Charles Butt, chairman of the grocery store chain, have committed $10 million to the Uvalde school district to build a new school to replace Robb Elementary, the site of last month’s mass shooting.

Nine Democratic members of the U.S. House from Texas called on state Attorney General Ken Paxton to order the release of government records related to the Uvalde school shooting. The request comes as the city has hired a private law firm to assist in withholding records.

# Energy / Pipelines / Mining / Chemical The polluter just got a million-dollar fine. That won’t cure this woman’s rare cancer: Rhonda Fratzke’s oncologist asked if she had ever worked with vinyl chloride, a potent carcinogen. She had not, but she lived near a Westlake Chemical plant that was just fined a million dollars for polluting the air with the dangerous chemical.

U.S. Popular Support for Ukraine Aid Declines Amid Ongoing Economic
Woes: The Secretary-General of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, shared a similar assessment earlier this month, when he told the Washington Post that the fighting could easily drag into an “unresolved conflict,” with neither side willing to make the concessions necessary for any deal.

Roe v. Wade Ruling Is Not Motivating Women to Vote in November: The fight over abortion moved to the forefront on Friday, when the court stripped away constitutional protections for abortion in a bombshell decision that is expected to lead to bans in roughly half the U.S.
states. “We need to restore the protections of Roe as law of the land.
We need to elect officials who will do that,” President Joe Biden said after the court handed down the ruling. “This fall, Roe is on the ballot.”

Progressive Delia Ramirez Wins Illinois Primary, Defeating Billionaire PAC Money: Bernie Sanders, who endorsed Ramirez, said of her victory:
“They have the money, but we’ve got the people.”

Dark Money Fuels the Anti-Abortion Movement’s Push to Control State
Legislatures: Millions have been quietly funneled into stacking courts with anti-abortion justices and authoring perilous legislation.

# Legal / DOJ
In Just 10 Days, The Supreme Court Has Unleashed A Revolution: The Supreme Court is allegedly the most passive, slowest-moving branch of government. But in a little more than one week’s time, the court may end up rewriting as much American law as any Congress or presidency in recent memory. To put things a bit differently, the court has gutted limits on gun possession, severely weakened the wall between church and state, and taken away a right that has existed for nearly 50 years, reinterpreting the First, Second, Fifth, Ninth and 14th Amendments in the process. And it’s not done yet.

Trump Throws New Tantrum After Former Aide Exposes Jan. 6 Tantrum: The former president lashed out at former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson, even describing her handwriting as “that of a Whacko”

Trump Allies Tried to Intimidate Cassidy Hutchinson Before Testimony:
One of the witness tampering messages the Jan. 6 committee displayed on Tuesday was received by the former Mark Meadows aide, according to Punchbowl News https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/cassidy-hutchinson-trump-team-intimidation-1376054/__;!!On18fmf1aQ!w9w3PPhFa3_q0ZBDAfZEaNz4CHhrmVahYbac4Yl9-tSNDJd7Pl3tVivWiTckSrBKW3zdfargtjVBXJtSVlKCOCdatkkKqNAm$

Did a White House Aide Just Pierce the Seemingly Impenetrable Trump Bubble? For all practical purposes, the case against Donald Trump has been made. He and everyone there knew there were protesters armed with AR-15s and other weapons standing outside the perimeter. They did not want to pass through the magnetic weapons scanners — the “mags” — and have their weapons confiscated. Trump did not care; he knew they were not after him. He wanted them in the crowd for his speech, and then he wanted them to take the Capitol.

Is Conservative Media Breaking Up With Ex-Lover Trump? This week’s shocking Jan. 6 revelations appear to have kickstarted a wave of conservative outlets turning their back on Trump. Is the break-up finally happening?

# Medical / Health
Anosmia and COVID: Does loss of smell from coronavirus signal more serious neurological issues ahead? Anosmia is the partial or total loss of the ability to smell, which vanquishes most of the sense of taste, too. The COVID version is more profound than the familiar dulling of the sense from the mucus of a common cold. And it has a different origin.

Contraception Could Be at Risk Next — Especially IUDs and Plan B, Experts Say: Will the conservative Supreme Court set its sights on eroding birth control rights?

Treatments for Ectopic Pregnancies in Missouri Are Delayed Due to “Trigger Law”: Ambiguities in the new law make it difficult for providers to know when they can perform life-saving abortions.

A Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian mall has killed at least 20 people and wounded 59, NPR reports. About 1,000 people were inside the Kremenchuk shopping center at the time of the missile strike.

Ukrainian officials say there’s been an increase in Russian shelling across the country over the past few days, according to Reuters.
“Several villages have been wiped from the face of the earth,” Kryvyi Rih governor Oleksander Vilkul said.

The Discovery Of Nesher Ramla: A New Species Of Prehistoric Humans.
During the analysis process, it was found that the pieces were 120,000 to 140,000 years old. Christened the Nesher Ramla Homo, the skull of this new human species was found to exhibit a combination of characteristics from more primitive and more modern populations alike.

# Border / Immigration
Texas-Mexico Border Chaos: At Least 46 Migrants Found Dead in San Antonio Inside 18-Wheeler, Reports Say The authorities said the tragedy appeared to be the deadliest migrant-smuggling operation in memory. Sixteen people were taken to hospitals. The driver of the truck was sentenced to life in prison in 2018.

Structural racism drives higher COVID-19 death rates in Louisiana, study
finds: Disproportionately high COVID-19 mortality rates among Black populations in Louisiana parishes are the result of longstanding health vulnerabilities associated with institutional and societal discrimination, according to research conducted by an interdisciplinary team under the mentorship of University of Maryland https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.newswise.com/coronavirus/structural-racism-drives-higher-covid-19-death-rates-in-louisiana-study-finds/?article_id=773530__;!!On18fmf1aQ!xukBTZ2o_3mu4Pj003NF1YVhaVkj9Iuu8HsDc_sT-gMA1V8H3ZflY9MawWG4Mvb6n1NxOdLJcW-aDQpDBp6NTM_QbvL5LJ3P$

Long COVID and the digestive system: An expert describes common
symptoms: Long COVID syndrome, also known as post-COVID, is more than fatigue and shortness of breath. Symptoms such as headaches, brain fog and ringing in the ears have been reported, and recently, physicians are seeing more patients with gastrointestinal problems.

Long COVID symptoms linked to inflammation: Prolonged inflammation after
SARS-CoV-2 infections caused permanent damage to lungs and kidneys, affected the brain, and correlated with behavioral changes in hamsters, suggesting a mechanism for the symptoms of Long COVID in people.

Claims for Injury, Death from COVID Shots Surge: According to a recent article in Politico, 500 claims were filed with the CICP during 2010-2020, compared to more than 8,000 claims filed during the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years.

Government program tapped to pay for COVID-19 vaccine injuries rarely sides with consumers: Because the vaccine is for a once-in-a-century virus and hasn’t been approved for routine use, anyone who seeks compensation for a serious side effect will be directed to a little-known federal program that rarely sides with consumers.

Covid-19 vaccine trials cannot tell us if they will save lives: None of the current trials are designed to detect a reduction in any serious outcome such as hospitalisations, intensive care use, or deaths https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/covid-19-vaccine-trials-cannot-tell-us-if-they-will-save-lives/__;!!On18fmf1aQ!xukBTZ2o_3mu4Pj003NF1YVhaVkj9Iuu8HsDc_sT-gMA1V8H3ZflY9MawWG4Mvb6n1NxOdLJcW-aDQpDBp6NTM_QbnKl0Ywa$

# Economy / Finance / Trade
More than half of all U.S. consumers live paycheck to paycheck: With inflation rates sitting at a 40-year high, taxpayers continue to struggle financially as the economy begins to slow, as illustrated by the latest decrease in retail sales last month. “Consumers have experienced a tough last couple of years as different factors have affected their financial lifestyle and there seems to be little relief in sight,” said Anuj Nayar, LendingClub’s financial health officer.

Financial Manipulation: Inequality keeps rising. Capitalism is a totalizing system built on slavery, colonialism, imperialism, plunder, deeply uneven power relations and exploitation. It remains a system where “might makes right” is the “rule of law.”

# Education / Schools
Why the Supreme Court’s football decision is a game-changer on school
prayer: The U.S. Supreme Court has consistently banned school-sponsored prayer in public schools. At the same time, lower courts have generally forbidden public school employees from openly praying in the workplace, even if no students are involved.

# Energy / Pipelines / Mining / Chemical The Pacific Northwest has defeated dozens of fossil fuel projects, but the industry still wants to quietly expand The fossil fuel industry, smarting from a string of defeats in Oregon and Washington, is hoping to continue to expand in the face of the climate crisis, but without arousing opposition.

# Environment / Climate / Interior / Infrastructure Swamps can protect against climate change, if we only let them: Wetlands absorb carbon dioxide and buffer the excesses of drought and flood, yet we’ve drained much of this land. Can we learn to love our swamps?

Lithuania Targeted by Massive Russian Cyberattack Over Transit Blockade:
Hacking group claimed attack in response to decision by Vilnius to ban transit of goods to Russia’s Kaliningrad enclave.

Kaliningrad Revisited: Where Putin’s Nuclear Threat Is Most: Vladimir Putin has put his nuclear forces on alert, a shock for many, but even more so for those just across the Polish border https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://worldcrunch.com/world-affairs/russia-nuclear-weapons__;!!On18fmf1aQ!xukBTZ2o_3mu4Pj003NF1YVhaVkj9Iuu8HsDc_sT-gMA1V8H3ZflY9MawWG4Mvb6n1NxOdLJcW-aDQpDBp6NTM_QbtWSCkx8$

If Putin decides to attack Ukraine with shorter-range, “tactical”
nuclear weapons, they will have to be removed from an Object S site, such as Belgorod-22, just 25 miles from the Ukrainian border, and transported to military bases. NATO to grow high-readiness forces to 300,000, ‘biggest overhaul’ since Cold War: Biden, was in Germany with other leaders of the Group of 7, to join other NATO leaders to focus on the war in Ukraine and  to decide on the alliance’s most important document, the Strategic Concept. The text is updated every decade to guide the strategic future of the 30-member alliance.

China will decide the outcome of Russia v. the West: Is Putin the face of the future or the final gasp of the past?

China’s reputation is at risk if Beijing were to help Russia in its war on Ukraine: China risks paying “high reputational costs” should it decide to assist Russia in its war against Ukraine, according to one political analyst.

What Lessons Does China Take From Putin’s War? Even if China were to adjust its policy toward Russia, as many believe it will, that will not happen during the Ukraine war.

Opposing China Means Defeating Russia: Moscow’s war isn’t a distraction.
It’s part and parcel of the threat posed by Beijing.

Turkey Withdraws Objection to Finland, Sweden Joining NATO: The three countries signed a trilateral memorandum on Tuesday night. Turkey agreed Tuesday to lift its opposition to Sweden and Finland joining NATO, a breakthrough in an impasse clouding a leaders’ summit in Madrid amid Europe’s worst security crisis in decades triggered by the war in Ukraine.

# Gov / Politics / US
Even Republicans Can Do the Right Thing: Chris Jacobs, a congressman from New York, uttered the unthinkable on national television the other
day: “I’m now the only Republican that’s come out and said I’m in favor of an assault weapon ban.” Wow. Jacobs is NOT seeking re-election. He is from the Buffalo area, the site of a mass shooting last month by an avowed White supremacist. Conservatives repeatedly say assault weapons are used by farmers and ranchers to kill varmints. Which is comical.

GOP Target Companies Paying Employees Travel Costs for Abortions: Tech firms and banks, including Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase, add ‘critical healthcare’ package https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/26/us-companies-pay-travel-costs-for-employees-seeking-abortions__;!!On18fmf1aQ!xukBTZ2o_3mu4Pj003NF1YVhaVkj9Iuu8HsDc_sT-gMA1V8H3ZflY9MawWG4Mvb6n1NxOdLJcW-aDQpDBp6NTM_QbuyKbjig$

Why Putting Trump on Trial Redeems American Justice:     Pity Merrick Garland. Whichever path America’s attorney-general takes, to prosecute Donald Trump or not, entails great risk. Putting the former president on trial would hasten the country’s drift towards political violence.
Letting him walk away would make another coup attempt more likely.
Garland is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. Either route could endanger US democracy.

Congressman Who Repeatedly Lied to FBI Escapes Prison Time: Prosecutors had asked for the maximum six months in prison, but a judge said the lies were “out of character” for Jeff Fortenberry. At the time of Fortenberry’s arrest last October, prosecutors said a broader probe was ongoing, and involved other public officials.

Elizabeth  Warren Says U.S. Is Just Two Anti-Filibuster Democrats Away  From Codifying Roe: Warren  is calling on voters to elect just two more Democratic senators this fall, in order to secure enough votes for filibuster reform or abolition with the goal of enshrining federal abortion protections into law. She pointed to two Democrats running this fall that could fill the role.

Abort the Court: What’s really at stake. Combined with the Court’s overturning on Thursday of New York City’s 100-year-old handgun ordinance, and its earlier rulings undermining Miranda rights and secular education, it’s clear that a partisan court, untethered from history and legal precedent, has chosen to wage war against both justice and democracy.

Judicial Reform Targets Misconduct by Judges: A House Appropriations Committee report issued alongside the 2023 FY funding bill called for the federal judiciary to report misconduct by judges to Congress and initiate a $1 million workplace survey.

Trump’s Secret Service can be dragged to his court battles but experts warn it may undermine agency’s role. Experts don’t suggest this approach as it’ll be ‘risky and shouldn’t be considered or pursued without the utmost caution and consideration of the potential benefits’

‘Seditious Conspiracy’: Experts Say Hutchinson Testimony Is ‘Smoking Gun’ and ‘Strongest Legal Evidence Against Trump’

Ghislaine Maxwell Sentenced to 20 Years Behind Bars: She was friends with Prince Andrew and Bill Clinton, and recruited girls at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago for her millionaire boyfriend to abuse. Maxwell, 60, was convicted in December of five federal charges for recruiting and grooming teenage girls to be sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein.

Cassidy Hutchinson’s chilling testimony. Garland will have to prosecute Trump. Hutchinson’s Chilling Testimony Leaves No Doubt Trump Was Ringleader of Violent January 6 Attack: Today, the House January 6 Committee questioned Cassidy Hutchinson, former top aide to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, who gave a first-hand account about President Trump’s actions on January 5 and 6 https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2022/06/28/hutchinsons-chilling-testimony-leaves-no-doubt-trump-was-ringleader-violent__;!!On18fmf1aQ!xukBTZ2o_3mu4Pj003NF1YVhaVkj9Iuu8HsDc_sT-gMA1V8H3ZflY9MawWG4Mvb6n1NxOdLJcW-aDQpDBp6NTM_QblW0fJyH$

Trump Grabbed Limo Steering Wheel on Jan. 6 to Go to Capitol: “I’m the f-ing president, take me up to the Capitol now!” ex-White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson recalled Trump yelling.

Ex-President Donald Trump lunged at a Secret Service agent in a limousine when told he could not be taken to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6,

Why it’s important to help kids who identify as LGBTQ and may be
struggling: It’s not uncommon for teens to experience mental health issues like anxiety. It’s believed 1 in 5 young people experiences some type of mental health issue during their teen years. For LGBTQ youth, the statistics are alarming. A recent national survey showed 45% expressed serious suicidal ideation.

# Media
Justice Thomas Wants to Make It Easier for People to Sue Media Outlets for Libel: Thomas wants to revisit a nearly six-year-old precedent that experts say is vital to protecting freedom of speech. “This case is one of many showing how New York Times and its progeny have allowed media organizations and interest groups ‘to cast false aspersions on public figures with near impunity.’” Thomas wrote: “SPLC’s ‘hate group’
designation lumped Coral Ridge’s Christian ministry with groups like the Ku Klux Klan and Neo-Nazis.”

Abortion pills to become next battleground in US reproductive fight: As conservative US states rush to enact abortion bans following the Supreme Court’s bombshell decision, the fight over reproductive rights in America is poised to shift to a new battleground: abortion-inducing pills.

The Supreme Court Is Trying to Turn Back the Clock 200 Years: Thanks to America’s right wing, we’ve entered the Great Regression. History may look back at the period in which we are living and call it the Great Regression. It is a time in which on issue after issue, we are seeing decades and sometimes centuries of progress reversed. If the term regression feels too academic, we may just as easily call it the Great Leap Backwards. If it continues at its current pace, it may end up being known as the American Dark Ages… or worse, to borrow from another historical saga, the Decline and Fall of the United States.

Codifying Sexual Privacy Rights: It’s time for Democrats in Congress to protect past landmark decisions from the current lunatic Supreme Court, and to force Republicans in Congress to take awkward votes. Some Americans, notably strict Roman Catholics, oppose birth control, hardly anyone wants it banned. On the other hand, there are anti-abortion activists who view some forms of birth control, like IUDs, as tantamount to abortion. Thomas has thus given Democrats an invitation, on the proverbial platter, to codify these rulings in statutory law.

The shame of the Supreme Court: The six Republican appointees are intent on returning America to the stone age. Only one of us now sits on the Supreme Court. He and five of his colleagues, all appointed by Republican presidents, five by presidents who lost the popular vote, three by a president who instigated a coup against the United States, are now violating stare decisis. They have not given a clear and convincing argument for why. Thomas wants the court to reverse more than a half century of rights.

Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism: This isn’t constitutionalism, or even politics. It’s religious fundamentalism, using legal theory as a fig-leaf. At the heart of Justice Samuel Alito’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturns Roe v. Wade (1973) and eliminates the constitutional right to abortion, is Alito’s objection that “the Constitution makes no mention of abortion.” For Alito and the many legal conservatives who think like him, unenumerated constitutional rights are inherently suspect. When a court recognizes an unenumerated right, these conservatives say, that court is almost certainly guilty of judicial activism.

‘Trigger Law’ States Flying Blind Without Biden’s Guidance: With Roe v.

Key facts about monkeypox: Media reports about an outbreak of monkeypox may sound scary, but there’s no need for most people to take special steps to avoid getting the viral illness, an infectious disease expert says. Monkeypox does not come from monkeys. It’s called monkeypox because it was first isolated from a monkey in Africa, but the reservoir for it is in rodents, specifically rodents in Central and West Africa.
We’ve been aware of monkeypox for decades, and we have been interested in it mostly because it’s a cousin of smallpox. It is a related orthopoxvirus. The symptoms, although somewhat less severe, are quite similar to smallpox. In most cases, it causes relatively mild illness, meaning most people don’t end up in the hospital with it.

Senate passes the PACT Act to provide more help to veterans exposed to burn pits and other toxins: The PACT Act seeks to provide an easy path to health care and benefits for veterans who served near open-air burn pits, which were used throughout the 1990s and the post-9/11 wars. “As a nation, we recognize the physical, obvious wounds of war,” said Sen.
Moran. “We are improving our ability to recognize and treat the mental wounds of war, though we still have a long ways to go.”

# Covid / Pandemics / Biologicals
Physician and health-policy researcher Ashish Jha went from being a “reluctant academic” to US President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 czar. He’s also a prolific science communicator, known for appearing in surprising media outlets to right misinformation wrongs. He says that the current situation in the United States should not be considered the ‘new normal’. “We have hundreds of thousands of Americans getting infected every day. We still have a few hundred people dying of COVID every day,”
he says. “I don’t think any of this is an acceptable normal for the long run.”

# Economy / Finance / Trade
UN Sustainable Development Goals aren’t really driving real policy change. These UN goals were supposed to drive policymakers towards sustainable change. But it’s not really working.

The Fed Is Crushing Investment Right When We Need It: Interest rate hikes are damaging the ability to take needed steps in our economic future. Millions of Americans are going to be deliberately thrown out of work because an economic model says that’s the only way to blunt inflation, while the seed corn of the next generation is eaten and the basic investments we need to sustain a productive economy are put off.

Who Is to Blame for Inflation? The Power Brokers of Capitalism: A half-century long power play, led by corporations, Wall Street, governments, and central banks, has gone badly wrong.

# Education / Schools
State funds for students at religious schools? Supreme Court says ‘yes’
in Maine case – but consequences could go beyond: Once again, the court has expanded the legal ways that public funds can be used for students at religious institutions.

Bipartisan Group’s School Meal Plan Axes Funds That Have Fed Millions of
Kids: The agreement comes just before the universal school meal program is set to expire. Despite being extended by Congress two times before, the Democrats who control both the House and the Senate have decided it is no longer worth funding.

# Employment / Labor
Warren Warns Powell That Fed’s Rate Hikes Could Drive US Economy ‘Off a
Cliff’: “You know what’s worse than high inflation and low unemployment?
It’s high inflation with a recession and millions of people out of work,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren told Jerome Powell.

# Energy / Pipelines / Mining / Chemical Only 11% of Americans blame Putin for gas prices: Those who blame neither Biden nor Putin point their fingers at oil companies, with 29% of respondents suggesting the industry is leveraging the current geopolitical instability to jack up its prices.

Democratic lawmakers are pushing back on President Joe Biden’s call for a gas tax holiday, arguing that oil companies would pocket the savings rather than passing it on to consumers. The resistance from key members of Biden’s own party highlights the dismal prospects for the proposal in Congress, even as it was eagerly embraced by Democratic governors and other legislators facing tough reelection battles in 2022.

# Environment / Climate / Interior / Infrastructure Global Warming: Why the problem is worse, and solutions simpler, than you thought: Noted ecologist John Harte offers a fresh take on the dire topic of climate change.

Supreme Court rejects appeal from Roundup maker over cancer claims: The decision by the justices not to intervene has implications for thousands of similar lawsuits against the company Bayer.

Set it back: moving levees to benefit rivers, wildlife and communities:
Removing dams is one thing, but thousands of levees also restrict rivers in the United States, and they’re not working as intended.

Drought-Stricken Lake Mead Less Than 150 Feet From “Dead Pool”: The surface of Lake Mead, North America’s largest artificial reservoir, now stands at 1044 feet above sea level and is dropping fast. Build Back Better Is a Pittance: Floods, fires, droughts, and the increasing uninhabitability of much of the American West demonstrate that we should be spending a great deal more. The coverage of the January 6th Committee, the impending reversal of Roe, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, $5-a-gallon gas, and gun massacres have knocked the devastation of the West off the front pages. But the climate crisis that is upon us right now is the most terrifying of all of these.

Extraditing Assange Would Be a “Legalized” Rendition to U.S. Torture: A pantomime of “justice” and “rule of law” cloaks the persecution of Julian Assange for exposing U.S. war crimes.

Julian Assange Is enduring unbearable persecution for exposing U.S. war

Uvalde Teacher’s Husband Was Detained Trying to Rescue Her: Ruben Ruiz, an officer with the Uvalde school police department, also reportedly had his gun taken away from him by fellow officers. Officer Ruiz attempted to storm the school after his wife, Eva Mireles, called him telling him she had been shot.

The Theater and the News: Tuesday’s January 6th hearing was devised to pack an emotional wallop, but the real news had to seep through the cracks. While the Committee is doing a fine job of dramatizing the scope, depth and details of Donald Trump’s plot to stay in power, the actual news on Tuesday came in the form of an aside and a coming attraction.

Killer South Dakota AG Convicted in Impeachment Trial: After he ran over a man and said he thought he hit a deer, the top law-enforcement official in the state was in trouble. Now he’s out of a job. Texas Seceding From U.S. ‘Would Mean War,’ Law Expert Says: A case following the Civil War made it clear that the state’s seceding from the United States is an unlikely and untenable scenario. In 1868’s Texas v.
White decision, the Court said leaving the Union can happen only through one of two ways: “revolution” or “consent of the States.

Was Texas ever voted in or ratified as part of the U.S.? Texas ratified the agreement with popular approval from Texans. The bill was signed by President Polk on December 29, 1845, accepting Texas as the 28th state of the Union. Texas formally joined the union on February 19, 1846.

Signed: April 12, 1844
Drafted: February 27, 1844

Texas can’t legally secede from the U.S., despite popular myth: The theme of independence has recurred throughout the history of Texas, which was a republic from 1836 – 45. But the Civil War established that a state cannot secede.

Prosecuting Trump for Jan. 6 Is Worth the Political Risk: If a coup attempt doesn’t merit prison time, what would? The question on everyone’s mind is whether Attorney General Merrick Garland will follow up on the incriminating evidence being laid out for him in meticulous detail about the ex-president and the conspiracy he set in motion to overturn the 2020 election.

As coup evidence mounts, progressives eye Georgia to jail Trump, not

The Russo-Ukrainian War: The Ukrainians are very evidently running low on ammo and Western reluctance to resupply them seems to be increasing.
There is definitely a war-weariness in the West. Doubts are creeping in about Ukrainian claims, understandably, since they’ve lied from the beginning.

How Joe Biden can help workers without Congress: Taken together, these three executive orders will improve the lives of millions of Americans.

Criminal prosecution of Trump will be a good start, but just the beginning. After the first round of hearings of the January 6th Committee, the most important takeaway is that the committee has built an ironclad case for Trump’s indictment. We’ve now seen irrefutable proof that Trump knew that his demands on Mike Pence were illegal.

Prosecuting Trump would set a risky precedent. Not prosecuting would be worse.
Are we afraid to test the principle that no one is above the law?

A Cancer Trial’s Unexpected Result: Remission in Every Patient: It was a small trial, just 18 rectal cancer patients, every one of whom took the same drug. But the results were astonishing. The cancer vanished in every single patient, undetectable by physical exam, endoscopy, PET scans or M.R.I. scans.

Honeybees Trained to Sniff Out Cancer: Bees may soon be able to take some of the sting out of cancer by detecting it early and getting patients into treatment sooner. Honeybees are known for their exquisitely sensitive sense of smell. They don’t have noses, but their feet, tongues and antennae are packed with olfactory glands. Soares said she could train bees in 10 minutes to identify cancer and other diseases, such as tuberculosis and diabetes in their early stages. By exposing the insects to the odor molecules produced by an illness and then feeding them sugar, they learn to associate the smell with a food reward.

Facebook Enables Anti-Abortion Clinics to Collect Highly Sensitive Info on Would-Be Patients: Personal data may someday be used as evidence against abortion seekers in states where the procedure is outlawed.

What ‘Dobbs’ Means for Women’s Equality: The seeds of unraveling a host of gender-based protections are present in the draft opinion.
Presumably, the draft Dobbs opinion’s logic runs both ways here: Just as constitutional sex equality promises don’t save Roe, Casey, or the abortion right, neither does the draft opinion’s burial of them imperil the broad constitutional sex equality guarantees the Court has for more than a half century said the 14th Amendment demands. If only that were the end of it.

Who is to blame for inflation? The Fed, not Biden, says this expert.
“The fact that the stock market is crashing right now has little to do with who’s in the White House,” according to author Christopher Leonard.
