Twitter is planning to start charging $20 per month for verification, and if the employees building it don’t meet their deadline, they’ll be fired by Elon Musk. The directive is to change Twitter Blue, the company’s optional, $4.99 a month subscription that unlocks additional features, into a more expensive subscription that also verifies users, according to people familiar with the matter and internal correspondence seen by The Verge.

The Precarious State of a Cultural Keystone Species: Tribal and Biological Assessments of the Role and Future of Black Ash. Black ash (Fraxinus nigra Marsh.) plays a central role in several Native American teachings (including a Wabanaki creation story) and has long been used for basketry, yet relatively little is known about the species’ ecology. The ongoing invasion of emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire), an invasive beetle killing millions of ash trees in eastern North America, threatens the future of black ash and the centuries-old basketry tradition

Supreme Court Considers Dismantling Native Sovereignty in Haaland v. Brackeen: The Supreme Court is deciding whether to overturn four decades of legal precedent on Indigenous rights. In the worst-case scenario, the court could usher in a new termination era in which tribes’ nation-to-nation relationship with the U.S. would be terminated as was done in the 1950s and 60s. Tribal sovereignty and nationhood would be eliminated, with disastrous consequences for Native people.

The Working Class Lost the $2 Billion Powerball Lottery: This is no accident, but rather the conscious marketing decisions of predatory lottery companies, who purposely market aggressively in lower-income communities and communities of color. The impressive potential payout of the lottery, coupled with the relatively low cost of buying a single ticket, can lead to addictive behaviors that can be extremely destructive to already distressed individuals.

Where in the World Is the U.S. Military? Despite recently closing hundreds of bases in Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States still maintains nearly 800 military bases in more than 70 countries and territories abroad, from giant “Little Americas” to small radar facilities. Britain, France and Russia, by contrast, have about 30 foreign bases combined. By my calculation, maintaining bases and troops overseas cost $85 to $100 billion in fiscal year 2014; the total with bases and troops in warzones is $160 to $200 billion.

# Science
Scientists made a material that doesn’t exist on Earth. That’s only the start of the story: If synthetic tetrataenite works in industrial applications, it could make green energy technologies significantly cheaper. Two teams of scientists  announced they manufactured a material, in a lab, that does not exist naturally on Earth. Until now, it has only been found in meteorites. It could roil the market in rare earths, currently dominated by China, and create a seismic shift in the industrial balance between China and the West.

How cancer cells can become immortal, new research finds a mutated gene that helps melanoma defeat the normal limits on repeated replication. One enzyme plays a key role in how tumor cells replicate and divide indefinitely. Identifying the genes that give these cells their immortality could provide new drug targets to treat cancer. A defining characteristic of cancer cells is their immortality. Usually, normal cells are limited in the number of times they can divide before they stop growing. Cancer cells, however, can overcome this limitation to form tumors and bypass “mortality” by continuing to replicate.
