Why Michigan is trying to shut down Canada’s Enbridge Line 5 pipeline: An ageing pipeline is at the centre of a heated debate about environmental and energy concerns. The agreement was meant to end uncertainty about the controversial 69-year-old oil and natural gas pipeline’s safety.

Ignore the buzz, here’s why Enbridge Line 5 won’t likely close anytime soon. Even if a judge sides with Michigan and orders the pipeline closed, it’s far from clear that it would trigger an immediate shutdown. Barring a dramatic change, Line 5 will keep pumping oil through the winter while judges, diplomats and regulators fight over how quickly the aging pipes must vacate the Straits, and whether Enbridge should build a tunnel to replace them.

Surprise magma chamber growing under Mediterranean volcano: Using a novel imaging technique for volcanoes that produces high-resolution pictures of seismic wave properties, a new study reveals a large, previously undetected body of mobile magma underneath Kolumbo, an active submarine volcano near Santorini, Greece. The presence of the magma chamber increases the chances of a future eruption, prompting the researchers to recommend real-time hazard monitoring stations near other active submarine volcanoes to improve estimations of when an eruption might be likely to occur.

A year on, we now know why the Tongan eruption was so violent. It’s a wake-up call to watch other submarine volcanoes

Ecuador moves to expand drilling in the Amazon: A novel idea to leave the country’s vast oil reserves in the ground fizzled for lack of international support. Extraction of 3,600 barrels per day started in the Ishpingo oil field which together with the nearby fields of Tiputini and Tambococha form the so-called ITT block, which holds more than 40 percent of the South American country’s proven crude reserves.
