In push to mine for minerals, clean energy advocates ask what going green really means: For local tribal members, the land they call Peehee Mu’huh, or “Rotten Moon,” is a hallowed place of remembrance and sacred burial site. In 1865, US cavalrymen massacred their ancestors at the site, including children and elders. Members of the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe visit often, praying and sharing food together in the windswept wilderness. Now, a contingent of forces that includes the US government and a large Canada-based mining corporation are pushing to make Thacker Pass a gateway to the future, they seek to carve into the landscape

After Centuries Of Stealing Land, The U.S. Govt Is Actually Inviting Tribes To Help Manage It: Last April, in a farm field in eastern Virginia, Ann Richardson gathered with a few hundred people for a celebration. It wasn’t a party, though. Several people were crying. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland was there. She was crying, too. Biden is laying the groundwork for a seismic shift in public land management, one that treats tribes as partners instead of an afterthought.

Juvenile Crime Surges, Reversing Long Decline. ‘It’s Just Kids Killing Kids: Violence among children has soared across the country since 2020, a stark reversal of a decades long decline in juvenile crime. In the U.S., homicides committed by juveniles acting alone rose 30% in 2020 from a year earlier, while those committed by multiple juveniles increased 66%. The number of killings committed by children under 14 was the highest in two decades, according to the most recent federal data.

Biden’s Social Security Pledge Will Likely Mean Huge Middle Class Tax Hikes, Expert Warns: Biden pledged to block Medicare and and Social Security cuts in his recent State of the Union address, in which he also promised not to hike taxes for families earning less than $400,000. But the two systems are slated to run $48 trillion and $21 trillion shortfalls, respectively, over the next 30 years, making it nearly impossible to avoid significant tax raises without cutting benefits, Riedl wrote.

The pandemic missing: The kids who didn’t go back to school: An analysis by The Associated Press, Stanford University’s Big Local News project and Stanford education professor Thomas Dee found an estimated 230,000 students in 21 states whose absences could not be accounted for. These students didn’t move out of state, and they didn’t sign up for private school or home-school, according to publicly available data. In short, they’re missing.

Why people are so concerned about the Ohio train derailment’s long-term effects: Vinyl chloride, a volatile organic compound, or VOC, and the most toxic chemical involved in the derailment, is known to cause cancer, attacking the liver, and can also affect the brain. For now, people are most concerned about the vinyl chloride. As of Feb. 16, 3,150 cubic yards of contaminated soil and 942,000 gallons of contaminants and contaminated liquid have been removed from the site, according to the Ohio EPA.

Fracking Wastewater Causes Lasting Harm to Key Freshwater Species: Exposing water fleas, a critical link in the aquatic food chain, to fracking wastewater reduces their survival and ability to reproduce, with potentially far-ranging consequences, new research shows. Extracting fossil fuels from underground reservoirs requires so much water a Chevron scientist once referred to its operations in California’s Kern River Oilfield “as a water company that skims oil.”

Residents react to base camp set up in Florida Keys: A tent city, as Upper Florida Keys locals call it, has arrived along U.S. 1. While everyone knows it’s there, most people didn’t know exactly what it was. The popup facility is a “base camp,” and “is NOT a migrant holding area,” according to a statement released by the Islamorada village government. The makeshift complex was built to house the influx of state law enforcement officers who were sent to the Florida Keys last month as part of Gov. Ron DeSantis’ executive order to deal with the increase of migrant landings in the Keys. “It’s got to be helpful because they’ve got people coming ashore quite a bit,” said Gary, a Florida Keys resident.

Over 7.5 million Ukranians are estimated to be displaced since the invasion began on Feb. 24, 2022. The numbers of Ukrainian casualties have not been fully reported but the most recent figures from the Biden administration estimated last November that over 100,000 people had been killed on both the Russian and Ukrainian sides.

Biden’s Ukraine Visit Upstages Putin And Leaves Moscow’s Military Pundits Raging: Russian state television covered the visit extensively, with anchors saying that it was clear that Biden “runs things” in Ukraine, which fits into the Kremlin’s narrative that Zelesnkyy’s government is a stooge of the U.S. administration.

Putin Halts Nuke Pact With US, Vows to Push War in Ukraine: Russian President Vladimir Putin gave no sign Tuesday he would change strategy in the Kremlin’s bloody war in Ukraine, and ratcheted up tensions with the West by suspending Moscow’s participation in the last remaining nuclear arms control pact with the U.S.

Putin put the last major nuclear arms treaty with the US on ‘life support,’ risking pulling the world back to a ‘dangerous’ time of uncontrolled arsenals, experts say: Without the New START pact and nuclear arms control, the US and Russia could expand their nuclear arsenals. The situation is “bad and could and probably will get worse,” one UN researcher said in response.

Why Do Politicians Weaponize Medicare? Because It Works: The Medicare wars are back, and almost no one in Washington is surprised. The reality is that Medicare’s value as a political weapon also sabotages any effort to come together to solve the program’s financing problems. The last two times the Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund was this close to insolvency — in the early 1980s and late 1990s — Congress passed bipartisan bills to keep the program afloat.

A Law Was Meant to Free Sick or Aging Inmates. Instead, Some Are Left to Die in Prison: Why the law hasn’t made a difference, so far. Judges made rulings without guidance from the sentencing commission, an independent agency that develops sentencing policies for the courts. The commission was delayed for more than three years because Congress did not confirm Trump’s nominees and President Joe Biden’s appointees were not confirmed until August. As a result, academic researchers, attorneys, and advocates for prison reform said the law has been applied unevenly across the country.

Now for sale: Data on your mental health: A study published Monday, outlines how expansive the market for people’s health data has become. After contacting data brokers to ask what kinds of mental health information she could buy, researcher Joanne Kim reported that she ultimately found 11 companies willing to sell bundles of data that included information on what antidepressants people were taking, whether they struggled with insomnia or attention issues, and details on other medical ailments, including Alzheimer’s disease or bladder-control difficulties.

GSK Scientists Knew About Zantac’s Cancer Risks For Forty Years: A new report in Bloomberg Businessweek says GSK’s own scientists have long known about the drug’s risks. The publication reported that over the span of multiple decades, GSK was warned by its own scientists and independent researchers about a potential cancer-causing impurity in the drug. The FDA considered the risks when it reviewed the drug, but the agency ultimately approved Zantac, or ranitidine, in 1983.
