# Border / Immigration / Migrants
Joe Biden Is Now Taking Immigration Policy Directly From Stephen Miller: Miller pushed for and crafted policies that separated migrant families (many of which are yet to be reunited), reduced refugee admissions to levels not seen in many years, and forced people to seek asylum in other countries instead of in the United States. With Trump’s departure, and Biden’s incoming administration’s rhetoric on migration, advocates were hopeful that the Miller era had ended. Last week, though, the Biden administration proposed new rules for asylum-seekers that would have fulfilled some of Miller’s wildest dreams.

Russian nuclear fuel: The habit Europe just can’t break: The EU managed to quickly cut down on Russian coal, gas and oil supplies, but can’t seem to do the same for nuclear. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to turn off the gas taps while the EU turned increasingly to liquefied natural gas deliveries from elsewhere caused the reliance on Moscow to tumble from 40 percent of the bloc’s gas supply before the war to less than 10 percent now. Nuclear energy has proved a trickier knot for EU countries to untie, for both historical and practical reasons.

The Salton Sea, an accident of history, faces a new water crisis: it has been shrinking for decades, killing species of fish that attract migratory birds and exposing the lake floor that generates dust harmful to human health. As the sea receded, it also left abandoned homes, closed resorts, and inland marinas that transformed the area into a fishing and water sports playground for Southern Californians by the mid-20th century. Now that water use is being reduced after two decades of drought that left Colorado’s reservoirs at dangerously low levels, the sea will shrink even faster. “Less water is going to the farmers, less water is going to the Salton Sea,” Mr Ruiz said. “That’s just the pure math.”

In 1996, the EPA was ordered to test pesticides for impacts on people’s hormones. They still don’t: New lawsuit aims to make the agency do what Congress ordered more than 25 years ago. “As of the time of this filing, more than 25 years after the passage of the Food Quality Protection Act, [the] EPA has yet to implement the Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program.”

Don’t Like Local Store Shelves Under Lockdown? Blame Organized Crime: Retailers are adding more on-the-shelves security to fight off the surge in shoplifting, and shoppers aren’t happy. Some stores are even shutting down entirely, knocked out of business by the one-two punch of increased theft and declining sales. Store owners say they have no choice.

Nearly All GOP Senators Bow Out Of 2024 Race; Governors Gear Up: Despite the Senate being packed with ambitious, big-name politicians, Republicans in the upper chamber have been hesitant about going toe-to-toe with former President Donald Trump in a marked departure from past elections. Meanwhile, hoards of Republican governors are gearing up for a potential run. This time, however, virtually all of the top Republican senators have declined to run and have actively refrained from cultivating buzz about them running.

Bristling Under Progressive Mayor, St. Louis Police Seek State Takeover: Police unions rallied around Missouri Senate Bill 78, which would reinstate a Civil War-era system of state oversight. Law enforcement unions argue that local control has “put politics in policing” and state oversight would help address an increase in homicides, a drop in police morale and staffing levels.

Two People Killed in ‘Chaotic’ Shooting at Senior Home: “We are tired of having this press conference. We’re tired of having to figure out how to wrap words around violence,” St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter said following the incident. A shooting motive hasn’t been determined, but police investigators don’t believe it was random. There were no immediate arrests. Saturday’s stunning violence was the second shooting in the city over the weekend. Three teenage boys were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds Friday night after a shooting at a memorial service for a student fatally stabbed at an area high school.

# LGBTQ / Gender
Tennessee’s House of Representatives passed a state ban on drag performances last week. The bill, HB 9, classifies ‘male and female impersonators’ as adult cabaret performers and bans them from public property or anywhere a minor might be able to see them, invoking the state’s obscenity law. When H.B. 9 was first introduced in November 2022, the ACLU of Tennessee noted that “dance, fashion, and music, essential components of a drag performance, are all protected by the First Amendment. Yet, these laws are written so broadly and vaguely that they would allow government officials to censor performers based on their own subjective viewpoints of what they deem appropriate on any given day.” “So, let’s call this what it is, a malicious attempt to remove LGBTQ people from public life,” the group said in a statement.

A Texas judge may block access to abortion pills. Here’s how that ruling could disrupt the US approval system for all drugs. “We’re talking about a judge who is a non-scientist overriding an agency full of experts about the safety and efficacy of a drug,” said Greer Donley, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh Law School.

Jim Crow Is Resurrected in Mississippi: Folks elected by the voters in their districts and across the state, will not stand for Black leadership. The City of Jackson has been either slighted or starved of infrastructure resources from the state for decades. Ignoring the Mississippi State Constitution and the U.S. Constitution, House Bill 1020 is just a takeover, plain and simple. And it’s not just a takeover, but a takeover of the Black City of Jackson by white Christian Republican legislators voting in lockstep.
