Proposed hydrogen pipeline could diminish Navajo Nation’s water supply: Forty percent of families on the reservation live without access to running water, according to the Navajo Nation Water Management Branch. TallGrass Energy, a multi-billion-dollar energy infrastructure company, has been attending local meetings for communities with their elected Navajo delegate over the past two years, to advocate for its plan to mine blue hydrogen and construct the largest pipeline in the country, from the Navajo Nation to Mexico. According to the Pipeline Safety Trust, hydrogen is more flammable and at risk of explosion than natural gas.

“Someone Tell Me What to Do”: Across the country, states require more training to prepare students and teachers for mass shootings than for those expected to protect them. The differences were clear in Uvalde, where children and officers waited on opposite sides of the door. One thing that seemingly unites all sides is the notion of better training for law enforcement. But, in actuality, few laws exist requiring such instruction.

Florida’s Food Fight Over Tomatoes Could Send Your Grocery Bill Higher: Some of those tomatoes are grown in Florida, where the Florida Tomato Exchange (FTE) is asking the Department of Commerce to step in and reduce the flow of tomatoes grown in Mexico. Florida farmers don’t like the competition, and they’re in a stew over it. They want the Biden administration to terminate the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA), a 2019 deal that ensures producers sell Mexican tomatoes at or above the TSA reference price to “eliminate the injurious effects of exports of fresh tomatoes to the United States.” According to the Florida Tomato Exchange, the TSA does not work and instead keeps Mexico from facing any retribution for dumping tomatoes onto the United States.

Can Trump run for president from prison? Yes, and it’s been done before: He could follow the playbook of the socialist firebrand Eugene V. Debs, who in 1920 received nearly a million votes while behind bars. The indictment and other ongoing criminal investigations of Donald Trump raise the real, if still remote, prospect that a leading contender for the 2024 presidential nomination could face prison time.

Netanyahu says the Gaza war has entered a new stage and will be ‘long and difficult.’: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the nation Saturday night that the military has opened a “second stage” in the war against Hamas by sending ground forces into Gaza and expanding attacks from the ground, air and sea. My friend wants a Dictator: I have a friend who told me recently that democracy doesn’t work and “our country needs a dictator.” We are now at the point in our country when people really do understand what Trump is saying, and they like it. They want what he is offering, and he is offering fascism. And that’s the problem. Trump condemns immigration for a reason that frightens me: because it is “poisoning the blood of our country.” What? He is rejecting everything our Founders stood for by saying that our country is based on purity of blood rather than on a set of principles. This should be shocking, but people love it because they know what he is saying. The fact that this clearly echoes Hitler is not a problem for them. They embrace the message and want to be a part of it.

AI doesn’t cause harm by itself. We should worry about the people who control it: We already live in societies in which power is exercised by a few to the detriment of the majority, and that technology provides a means of consolidating that power. As advanced systems like ChatGPT captivate the public imagination, debates intensify over who should guide powerful new technologies — and for what aims. A thoughtful perspective comes from writer Kenan Malik, who argues AI itself does not directly cause harm; rather, we should worry about the humans who control it.

A CFPB report published in June 2022 found that more than 5,000 troops and family members reported medical billing issues to the agency from 2018 to 2021.
