If we want companies to stop burning fossil fuel, why are we paying them for it? New Jersey Councilwoman, 30, Shot Dead Outside Her Home: Eunice Dwumfour was found inside her car with multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said. She sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. She lived in the townhouse complex where she was killed, just steps from her home. She preliminarily appears to have been the target of the gunfire but a motive for the shooting was not immediately disclosed.

Republicans started the process Wednesday to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The House approved a procedural motion setting up a likely final vote to boot Omar on Thursday. The move is retaliation for Democrats having removed Reps. The specialized division of the Memphis police department unit operated with an annual budget of more than $28 million a year from the time of its creation in 2021 until it was disbanded over the weekend. Tennessee is considering banning gender-affirming care as child abuse. Doctors, parents, and advocates are speaking out. The bill is the first time a state has attempted to create criminal penalties for gender-affirming healthcare of minors. The bill known as SB 1 would not only ban trans minors from accessing puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy and undergoing surgery, it would also ban the use of telehealth and force all children currently undergoing treatment to stop by March 2024. The bill and its equivalent in the Tennessee House of Representatives are scheduled for more committee meetings next week.

A tax break for big polluters is also starving public schools in Texas: In less than a decade, the northern coastline of Corpus Christi Bay, in San Patricio County, Texas, has been developed from a greenspace of wetlands and dunes into a miles-long corridor of petrochemical and industrial facilities, their cracking towers rising hundreds of feet into the air. Dominating that cyborg skyline is the tower flare at the Corpus Christi Liquefaction facility, owned by gas giant Cheniere. The plant’s three operational “trains,” which came online in 2019, produce 16.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year for export to hungry markets in Europe, Asia, and other international destinations. There are plans to add seven smaller trains at the facility, equivalent to another 11 million tons of capacity.

Public lands are not neutral. A team from Northwestern University used powerful X-rays for the first time in the scientific community to see through the wrapping of a 1,900-year-old mummy. The examinations provided a number of details about the mummy – the person was a girl about five years old and buried with a scarab amulet that was meant to spiritually protect the body as it travels to the afterlife. The analysis also revealed that the young girl’s skeleton is still well preserved and shows no sign of trauma, suggesting she likely died from disease.

The Museum Built on Native American Burial Mounds: For decades, Dickson Mounds Museum in Illinois displayed the open graves of more than 200 Indigenous people. Thirty years after a federal law required museums to begin returning remains, the statewide museum system still holds thousands. For more than 800 years, they laid undisturbed, carefully buried inside a mound of earth overlooking a quiet valley and a slow river. Then in the 1920s, a chiropractor named Don Dickson dug open the mound, eventually exposing the remains of hundreds of Native Americans. He left them in place, and his family turned the excavation into a roadside attraction they called Dickson Mounds. They charged visitors 50 cents for admission.
