# Covid / Pandemics / Biologicals
Physician and health-policy researcher Ashish Jha went from being a “reluctant academic” to US President Joe Biden’s COVID-19 czar. He’s also a prolific science communicator, known for appearing in surprising media outlets to right misinformation wrongs. He says that the current situation in the United States should not be considered the ‘new normal’. “We have hundreds of thousands of Americans getting infected every day. We still have a few hundred people dying of COVID every day,”
he says. “I don’t think any of this is an acceptable normal for the long run.”

# Economy / Finance / Trade
UN Sustainable Development Goals aren’t really driving real policy change. These UN goals were supposed to drive policymakers towards sustainable change. But it’s not really working.

The Fed Is Crushing Investment Right When We Need It: Interest rate hikes are damaging the ability to take needed steps in our economic future. Millions of Americans are going to be deliberately thrown out of work because an economic model says that’s the only way to blunt inflation, while the seed corn of the next generation is eaten and the basic investments we need to sustain a productive economy are put off.

Who Is to Blame for Inflation? The Power Brokers of Capitalism: A half-century long power play, led by corporations, Wall Street, governments, and central banks, has gone badly wrong.

# Education / Schools
State funds for students at religious schools? Supreme Court says ‘yes’
in Maine case – but consequences could go beyond: Once again, the court has expanded the legal ways that public funds can be used for students at religious institutions.

Bipartisan Group’s School Meal Plan Axes Funds That Have Fed Millions of
Kids: The agreement comes just before the universal school meal program is set to expire. Despite being extended by Congress two times before, the Democrats who control both the House and the Senate have decided it is no longer worth funding.

# Employment / Labor
Warren Warns Powell That Fed’s Rate Hikes Could Drive US Economy ‘Off a
Cliff’: “You know what’s worse than high inflation and low unemployment?
It’s high inflation with a recession and millions of people out of work,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren told Jerome Powell.

# Energy / Pipelines / Mining / Chemical Only 11% of Americans blame Putin for gas prices: Those who blame neither Biden nor Putin point their fingers at oil companies, with 29% of respondents suggesting the industry is leveraging the current geopolitical instability to jack up its prices.

Democratic lawmakers are pushing back on President Joe Biden’s call for a gas tax holiday, arguing that oil companies would pocket the savings rather than passing it on to consumers. The resistance from key members of Biden’s own party highlights the dismal prospects for the proposal in Congress, even as it was eagerly embraced by Democratic governors and other legislators facing tough reelection battles in 2022.

# Environment / Climate / Interior / Infrastructure Global Warming: Why the problem is worse, and solutions simpler, than you thought: Noted ecologist John Harte offers a fresh take on the dire topic of climate change.

Supreme Court rejects appeal from Roundup maker over cancer claims: The decision by the justices not to intervene has implications for thousands of similar lawsuits against the company Bayer.

Set it back: moving levees to benefit rivers, wildlife and communities:
Removing dams is one thing, but thousands of levees also restrict rivers in the United States, and they’re not working as intended.

Drought-Stricken Lake Mead Less Than 150 Feet From “Dead Pool”: The surface of Lake Mead, North America’s largest artificial reservoir, now stands at 1044 feet above sea level and is dropping fast. Since the beginning of March, Lake Mead has dropped about 23 feet, and compared with the 5-year trend, the reservoir’s water levels are well below average, at the lowest point since the lake was filled nearly a century ago. https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.zerohedge.com/weather/lake-mead-less-150-feet-dead-pool__;!!On18fmf1aQ!1M3q-knJ_XwX-yHyh7hJ5hO6TOVEHiysdEeQWABdWgjP1j2mgj934S6h1WS0Py-baasmbLmyuNVEV2Wua25nGSQJI-iv6Tp8$

The coverage of the January 6th Committee, the impending reversal of Roe, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, $5-a-gallon gas, and gun massacres have knocked the devastation of the West off the front pages. But the climate crisis that is upon us right now is the most terrifying of all of these.
