Crucial misrepresentations about glyphosate continue to threaten agriculture. This scientist explains how the UN agency IARC likely manipulated the data: It seems that IARC’s judgment carried such cachet that few felt the need to actually read the 91 pages devoted to it and form an independent opinion of the report. A partial explanation for IARC’s largely unquestioned authority may be the fact that the agency is loosely affiliated with the World Health Organization.

Terrifying Russian Bat Virus Could Spark the Next Pandemic: Lab tests suggest the Khosta-2 virus thrives in human cells and is resistant to current coronavirus vaccines. We need better jabs to fight new animal viruses. The COVID-19 pandemic isn’t over. In fact, it shows signs of lingering for, well, a long time. But even as politicians and health authorities struggle with how, if at all, to keep addressing the current pandemic, scientists are already anticipating the next one.

Revealed: How scientists who dismissed Wuhan lab theory are linked to Chinese researchers: Despite declaring no conflicts of interest at the time, it has since emerged that the letter was orchestrated by British zoologist Peter Daszak, president of the US-based EcoHealth Alliance, which funded research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where the leak was suspected. However, The Telegraph can disclose that 26 of the 27 scientists listed in the letter had connections to the Chinese lab

Old-school discipline doesn’t work any more, and shouldn’t: Why last year’s discipline reforms were the right move, and why we need to go further. Schools that buck the trend and continue to dole out punishment for minor ‘infractions’ end up producing the very thing they want to attack: bad behavior. The happiest schools are those that know when to turn a blind eye.

Deforestation 101: Everything You Need to Know: Trees have been around for about 370 million years. Today, there are about three trillion trees and ten billion acres of forest on Earth. That may sound like a lot, but the planet has lost more than one billion acres of forest to deforestation since 1990. The biggest human causes of deforestation are farming,  raising cattle and the uncontrolled cultivation of crops like rubber and palm oil.

‘Dangerously Low’ Mississippi River Level May Spark Transport Chaos For Farm Goods During Harvest: A drought is drying up parts of the Mississippi River, a major export channel for corn and soybeans. The waterway is responsible for at least half of the US corn and soybean exports. After U.S. soldiers were told to go on Food Stamps, Congress finds another $12 billion for Ukraine: News follows the Senate passing a 40 billion aid package in May, a 14 billion package in March. President Biden asked Congress for an additional 11.7 billion in aid for Ukraine, with Congress, in turn, seems to be jumping at his behest. As a reminder, earlier this month the Army told active-duty American soldiers to go on food stamps if they were unable to afford food thanks to inflation. They Were Entitled to Free Care. Hospitals Hounded Them to Pay: in recent decades, many of the hospitals have become virtually indistinguishable from for-profit companies, adopting an unrelenting focus on the bottom line and straying from their traditional charitable missions. And, as Providence illustrates, some hospital systems have not only reduced their emphasis on providing free care to the poor but also developed elaborate systems to convert needy patients into sources of revenue. The result … is that thousands of poor patients were saddled with debts that they never should have owed.
