# Indigenous
In a first, US pays tribes to move away from climate threats: The Interior Department has selected the winners of a new competition to relocate communities vulnerable to climate change. In Louisiana, the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw tribe has been awarded a natural disaster grant to resettle away from their sinking land. But other indigenous Americans have no way out. The tiny Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw tribe has called the coastal marshlands of southern Louisiana home ever since their ancestors settled there to avoid forced relocation under the Indian Removal Act of 1830.

# Border / Immigration
Lost in the politicized conversation over the busing of migrants is the burden of nonprofits and volunteers who’ve had to create infrastructure to support the influx of people being moved across the country with little to no communication between the political leaders involved. Texas transported about 13,000 migrants to New York, Chicago and Washington, D.C. In the absence of communication, nonprofits are having to pick up the pieces for this mass movement of migrants.

Toxic ‘Forever Chemicals’ Lurking in Children’s Textiles, Pet Food Packaging: The environmental toxins known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been found in products geared toward vulnerable pets and babies.

Biden blames unvaccinated for US’s COVID-19 slog. Here We Go Again: Biden’s remarks represented a notable shift in tone as he more sternly confronts Americans who have not got the COVID-19 vaccine and conservative politicians who have spouted anti-vaccine messages or opposed coronavirus-related mandates.

The White House is blaming the wrong people for the coming covid-19 wave: Only days after the suggestion that the US makes free at-home tests available for everyone in the US was met with scorn by White House press secretary Jen Psaki, the officials leading the covid-19 response took another step in the wrong direction, blaming the crisis on unvaccinated people, and all but suggesting they will deserve covid-19, if it comes their way.

Jen Psaki Accidentally Tells the Truth About How Expensive Covid Rapid Tests Are in U.S. When Psaki scoffed at the idea of sending Americans free Covid-19 rapid tests, it was a reminder that a for-profit health care system still limits the U.S. pandemic response.

Health Care System Mandates COVID Shot, Withdraws Religious and Medical Exemptions: The Covid-19 vaccine mandate for health-care workers could spark an uptick in litigation challenging the denial of medical and religious exemptions to the controversial rule. The interim regulation from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services requires more than 17 million employees to be fully vaccinated by Jan. 4, 2022. But it also allows workers to forgo the shots if they have valid religious objections or medical reasons.

Top Fed Official: Fed will  “keep at this” until your savings accounts are drained: Kansas City Fed President Esther George should be celebrated for being honest about how the Federal Reserve works. Federal Reserve raised its target for interest rates by another 0.75 percent. The target has now gone up overall by 3.75 percent since earlier this year, a steep increase that is essentially an attempt by the Fed to slam the brakes on the U.S. economy and stomp out inflation.

House analysis confirms corporations use ‘cover of inflation to raise prices excessively’: “It is unacceptable that certain companies and industries are engaged in extreme price hikes under the cover of inflation,” said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi.

# Education / Schools
The Texas Education Agency announced a set of school safety proposals that would require public schools to install silent panic alarms, automatic locks on exterior doors and other changes to bolster security. These proposed requirements could take effect this school year after the Texas Education Agency takes public comment into consideration.

Biden Promises ‘No More Drilling’ Just Days After Demanding More Drilling: The remarks could prove controversial, as gas prices have risen sharply during Biden’s time in office and some blame his anti-oil policies for contributing to the surge. The average price of a gallon of gas was $2.31 per gallon when Biden took office. It peaked above $5 per gallon this summer, and sits at $3.80 now, according to AAA.

In the eye of the storm: The sea level rise is occurring faster than anywhere else in the world because the South Jersey coastline continues to sink. In a remote corner of N.J., a watch is kept on climate change, rising seas, and sometimes hurricanes

Egg whites can be transformed into a material capable of filtering microplastics from seawater: Researchers at Princeton Engineering have found a way to turn your breakfast food into a new material that can cheaply remove salt and microplastics from seawater. The researchers used egg whites to create an aerogel, a lightweight and porous material that can be used in many types of applications, including water filtration, energy storage, and sound and thermal insulation.

Greenpeace Report; ‘Most Plastic Is Just Not Recyclable’: We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis. That’s the definitive conclusion of a new Greenpeace report released Monday that found that only five to six percent of plastics in the U.S. were actually recycled, a major decline from the still relatively low highs of 9.5 percent in 2014 and 8.7 percent in 2018.

New evidence shows pesticides contain PFAS, and scale of contamination is unknown: Our new investigation found significant sources of ‘forever chemicals’ on farmland and in communities. Democracy in America and Israel: What will it take to hold onto it? The parallels and cross-influences are ominous. When formerly democratic countries descend into fascism, can they come back? In the case of Germany and Italy, both of which had only weak democratic institutions, it took the catastrophic loss of a war and an occupation.

What Does The Bible Say About Homosexuality? At the heart of the claim that the Bible is clear “that homosexuality is forbidden by God” is poor biblical scholarship and a cultural bias read into the Bible. Although its unlikely that the biblical authors had any notion of sexual orientation (for example, the term homosexual wasn’t even coined until the late 19th century.)

Puberty blockers, hormones, and gender affirmation surgery are no longer available to trans Florida minors. The state medical board, which was entirely appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, banned doctors from offering care to minors seeking to transition. This restriction is the first of its kind to circumvent the state House, where the ban was denied twice.

# Marijuana / Hemp / CBD Oil
Legal history of cannabis in the United States: Cannabis was officially outlawed for any use (medical included) with the passage of the 1970 Controlled Substances Act (CSA). Multiple efforts to reschedule cannabis under the CSA have failed, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers’ Cooperative and Gonzales v. Raich that the federal government has a right to regulate and criminalize cannabis, even for medical purposes.

Here’s Why Legalized Pot Won’t End the War on Due Process: Law enforcement still doesn’t need a legitimate reason to destroy your life and seize your money. Satellite images showed greenhouses on Blu Graham’s property in the Emerald Triangle, a region known for cannabis cultivation, and the Humboldt County Planning and Building Department simply assumed he was growing marijuana without paying the county the rebate. Based on nothing else, the government found Graham guilty of growing cannabis without a license, a civil offense in a state with legalized marijuana.

Texas was warned its hemp law would complicate marijuana prosecutions. Lawmakers didn’t listen: Crime labs repeatedly told lawmakers and budget officials that they couldn’t distinguish between hemp and marijuana without new testing resources. The issue got almost no attention.

The Push to Decriminalize Marijuana Possession Continues, Town by Town: In next week’s midterm elections, voters in Arkansas, Maryland, Missouri, North Dakota and South Dakota will consider statewide initiatives that would legalize recreational marijuana use for adults. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia already have legalized recreational marijuana. Medical cannabis is legal in nearly 40 states, plus the District of Columbia. Marijuana-related measures also will be on the ballot in dozens of municipalities in six other states, including Texas, another indication of how the nation’s attitudes toward marijuana are quickly evolving.
