Scientists have discovered two partial human skulls in central China that they say could potentially belong to an unknown archaic human species. The skulls are 105,000 to 125,000 years old, and they contain a unique mix of modern human and Neanderthal features. Excitingly, they could be the key to filling in some of the missing pieces of the human family tree in east Asia.

Exciting ancient skull uncovered in China: A rare, well-preserved ancient human skull found in central China could be a million-year-old Homo erectus. As excavation of the fossil continues, archaeologists and palaeoanthropologists anticipate that the skull could give a fuller picture of the diverse family tree of archaic humans living throughout Eurasia in prehistoric times.

How four decades of tax cuts fueled inequality: As average people struggle, the wealthy and big businesses benefit.
The tax cuts carved a $750 billion hole in the federal budget, prompted cuts in multiple public programs and added to the deficit. The cuts, spread over six years, totaled $2.4 trillion in today’s dollars, basically the cost of the Biden administration’s multi-year, scaled-down Build Back Better bill that never made it out of Congress.

The Senate just passed legislation to protect same-sex and interracial marriage. The bipartisan, 61-36 vote, saw all Democrats joined by 12 Republicans in support of the bill, which will now go back to the House, where it is expected to pass before the end of the year. The Senate, with its 60-vote threshold, was the main obstacle to the bill’s passage, but it passed with a 61-36 vote. The House is expected to easily pass it before sending it to President Biden’s desk.

American Cancer Society Should Fight Cancer, Not Vaping: Using e-cigarettes, or “vaping,” are terms used synonymously to refer to the use of a wide variety of electronic, battery-operated devices that aerosolize, but do not burn, liquids to release nicotine and other substances. Nicotine-containing e-cigarettes are regulated as “tobacco products” by the FDA because the nicotine is derived from the tobacco plant. E-cigarettes pose a threat to the health of users and the harms are becoming increasingly apparent.

Researchers at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University) have discovered a way to use magnetic materials to quickly and affordably remove microplastics from water. The findings show the materials work to remove plastic particles 1,000 times smaller than plastics currently detectable in existing water treatment plants. “The nano-pillar structure we’ve engineered to remove this pollution, which is impossible to see but very harmful to the environment, is recycled from waste and can be used multiple times.”
