The Fight To Return Native Remains to Their Tribes: UC Berkeley alone still holds the remains of 10,000 people.
Museums took our ancestors. They took many people’s ancestors. But they took the remains of Native Americans in vast, vast quantities. Some of these museums have just this huge collections. New Documents Appear To Show Dr. Fauci lied about involvement in COVID lab leak study: Richard Ebright, board of governors professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Rutgers University and laboratory director at the Waksman Institute of Microbiology, told Newsweek these documents show “unequivocally” that NIH grants were used to fund controversial gain-of-function (GOF) research at the Wuhan Insitute of Virology in China—something U.S. infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci has denied.

Documents obtained by The Intercept contain new evidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the nearby Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment, along with their collaborator, the U.S.-based nonprofit EcoHealth Alliance, have engaged in what the U.S. government defines as “gain-of-function research of concern,” intentionally making viruses more pathogenic or transmissible in order to study them, despite stipulations from a U.S. funding agency that the money not be used for that purpose.

On Wall St., ‘socially responsible’ is common sense. In Congress, it’s
political: Lawmakers are trying to restrict these investment choices in workplace retirement plans, but big fund managers are trying to give shareholders a voice https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.realclearmarkets.com/2023/03/06/on_wall_street_esg_is_common_sense_in_congress_its_political_885380.html__;!!On18fmf1aQ!zXx8DytPauBiz3HOObtopMRuGqCxKdiLzXOp9KWrPtTinaPVMAw7I-AmC7AwidNRjUoaOi3hSIHWsSl_F4rrZU5hOzzRl-7l$

Fossil fuel companies donate millions to US universities: Fossil fuel companies gave over $700 million in research funding to 27 colleges and universities from 2010 to 2020, according to a new study from the left-leaning think tank Data for Progress. Universities have downplayed the negative impacts of fossil fuel emissions.

# Environment / Climate / Interior / Infrastructure Rare insect found at Arkansas Walmart sets historic record, points to deeper ecological questions: A giant insect plucked from the façade of an Arkansas Walmart has set historic records. The Polystoechotes punctata (giant lacewing) is the first of its kind recorded in eastern North America in over 50 years, and the first record of the species ever in the state.

Kentucky residents angered by U.S. Forest Service logging plan that targets mature trees:  Biden pledged to protect old-growth trees, but proposed clear-cutting in national forests collides with climate policy.
last summer’s floods and mudslides that killed 44 people in neighboring counties of the Appalachian Mountain range, a disaster residents view as inextricably linked to wanton extraction of both coal and timber.

Utah wants to disable the law that led to the creation of four of its magnificent National Parks: Utah’s complaint confirms how successful the Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears monuments have been in attracting visitors. This is a bad thing, ‌Utah argues, because visitors damage these sites, destroy archaeological sites, and get lost, straining local search-and-rescue teams. But instead of working with Congress to allocate more funds to manage visitors, Utah is asking unelected judges to step in to remove protections from those areas, as if it would make visiting less attractive. In January, the federal government asked the court to dismiss Utah’s lawsuit.

Plan to incinerate soil from Ohio train derailment is ‘horrifying’, says
expert: Soil is being sent to a nearby incinerator with a history of clean air violations, raising fears the chemicals will be redistributed.
Incinerating the soil is especially risky because some of the contaminants that residents and independent chemical experts fear is in the waste, like dioxins and PFAS, haven’t been tested for by the EPA, and they do not incinerate easily, or cannot be incinerated.

Time is running out to restore plants and animals that exist only in
captivity: Disappeared from the wild, yet not entirely extinct. And it’s one not peculiar to the Socorro dove. Research  has confirmed that at least 33 animals and 39 plants no longer have wild populations, but survive under human care in places such as zoos, aquariums, botanic gardens and seed banks.

# Environment / Climate / Interior / Global Nations reach accord to protect marine life on high seas: For the first time, United Nations members have agreed on a unified treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas, representing a turning point for vast stretches of the planet where conservation has previously been hampered by a confusing patchwork of laws.

How Auditing Giant KPMG Became a Global Sustainability Leader While Serving Companies Accused of Forest Destruction: The firm vouched for an Indonesian company with a supply chain beset by deforestation allegations and a project in Canada that led to an Indigenous forest’s “death by a thousand cuts.”

Twitter Bots Are Promising Cheap Guns to Anyone Using the N-Word: Are they undercover cops? Are they phishing scams? Or are they attempts to sow racial division? When Elon Musk acquired Twitter, he made it clear that eradicating spam bots was a top priority. But his strategies on that front have produced, at best, mixed results. Moreover, in recent months, some users have been plagued by a type of spam that directly violates Twitter policy: automated replies from accounts offering guns for sale.

We Must Overturn SCOTUS Decisions That Effectively Deny Rights to Black
People: George Floyd’s murder is part of a through line of police violence first enabled by the Dred Scott ruling. The 2020 protests against police brutality after the death of George Floyd were the biggest in United States history. Not since the 1960s assassinations of the Kennedy brothers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. has our nation, and indeed the world, witnessed a more significant martyrdom.

Health System Parasites: Example No. 452: Middleman companies contract with insurers to find someone else to pay medical costs. The teenage son of a friend broke his arm in a playground fall. Their insurance company, Health New England, paid the hospital bill. Then they received a letter from something called EXL advising that the injury “may have been caused by an act or omission of another person or entity.” In which case EXL would go after said entity to pay some or all of the medical bill, thus saving Health New England some money. EXL demanded they fill out an extensive form about the circumstances of the accident. It is part of the game of paying layers of middlemen to maximize profits and shift costs.

Wagner Boss Appears to Issue Threat to Kremlin Over Bakhmut: Yevgeny Prigozhin, Head of Wagner private military company (PMC), is confident that the retreat of his troops from the city of Bakhmut will collapse the entire front, and then Russia will blame the mercenaries for the defeat in the war https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/wagner-groups-financier-reflects-retreat-092311188.html__;!!On18fmf1aQ!zXx8DytPauBiz3HOObtopMRuGqCxKdiLzXOp9KWrPtTinaPVMAw7I-AmC7AwidNRjUoaOi3hSIHWsSl_F4rrZU5hO_FIxHBV$

Ukraine’s unexpected resistance in Bakhmut: Russia seemed on the verge of capturing Bakhmut. This past weekend, Ukrainian troops mounted a counteroffensive with unexpected success.  Ukrainian military leaders are determined to hold onto Bakhmut, Kyiv officials said Monday, even as Russian forces continued to encroach on the devastated eastern Ukrainian city that they have sought to capture for six months at the cost of thousands of lives.

Wagner Chief Attacks Kremlin Over Ammunition ‘Betrayal’: “We are trying to figure out the reason: Is it just ordinary bureaucracy or a betrayal?” Yevgeny Prigozhin said. The head of Russia’s Wagner mercenary force warned that Russia’s position around the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut was in peril unless his troops got ammunition, the latest sign of tension between the Kremlin and the private militia chief.

Russia Dusts Off Old, Patched-Up Tanks for War, Says U.K: Even Russia’s premier tank force is having to use T-62 tanks, says the U.K. Ministry of Defence. The MoD said 800 Soviet-era T-62s had been taken from storage and given slight upgrade since last summer. “In recent days, Russian BTR-50 armored personnel carriers, first fielded in 1954, have also been identified deployed in Ukraine for the first time,” it added.
“However, both these vintage vehicle types will present many vulnerabilities on the modern battlefield, including the absence of modern explosive reactive armour.”

U.S. Risks Total Chaos in a Space War With China and Russia: The fight could be left to the whims of Elon Musk, JD Vance, and others linked to privatized space defense tech. A growing number of companies are racing to get into the space defense business, but a major conflict of interest scandal could be on the horizon. One such company, True Anomaly, is using artificial intelligence to pilot small satellites that will be able to detect spy satellites from adversaries like China and Russia.
