Montana’s anti-Indigenous politics aren’t going away: The now-dead proposal to ‘investigate’ reservations was neither the beginning or the end of combative attitudes towards tribal nations in the state. In early January, the Montana State Legislature’s 2023 session started with a bang. That first week, Sen. Keith Regier, R-Kalispell, brought a draft resolution calling on the U.S. Congress to “investigate alternatives to the reservation system,” using language rife with misinformation and the stereotypes typical of anti-Indigenous groups. After pushback from the state’s bipartisan American Indian Caucus, tribal nations and his own constituents, Regier said he would not introduce the legislation, adding that it had been written by a local constituent

Ropen: A Living Dinosaur or a Figment of Faith? After numerous expeditions into the wilds of Papua New Guinea, Paul Nation believed he finally made the discovery of a lifetime in 2006. The Texas-born cryptozoologist, explorer, and “living-pterosaurs investigator” came to the South Pacific Island nation to coordinate a search for a nocturnal flying creature known as Ropen. And on this fateful expedition, he believed he finally caught them on videotape.

Has the mythical dragon finally caught on camera? As much as we would all love it to be true, it’s almost certainly CGI – but that hasn’t stopped the video from spreading virally around the internet and social media with plenty of even stranger theories connected to it. Alleged dragon video claims footage is from China, it’s probably CGI but everybody wants it to be real.

The Twilight of the Deficit Hawks: President Biden’s willingness during the State of the Union to hold Republicans accountable for wanting to cut social spending is indicative of one optimistic trend: The era of bipartisan deficit hawkery is coming to a close. Read David Dayen on how the paradigm on social programs in Washington has shifted. Democrats have stopped being the willing partner in a great conspiracy to slash social insurance.

Republicans Have Wanted To Cut Medicare And Social Security For Decades: “Instead of making the wealthy pay their fair share, some Republicans want Medicare and Social Security to sunset every five years,” President Joe Biden said at Tuesday’s State of the Union. President Biden drew a raucous response from Republicans during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night when he said some GOP lawmakers want to cut Social Security and Medicare. “Anybody who doubts it, contact my office. I’ll give you a copy of the proposal,” he said as Republican lawmakers jeered.

# Education / Schools
Will the Education Culture War Backfire on Republicans? The GOP’s culture war on K-12 education is a false pretext for the same old agenda of undermining public schools. But according to new polling, parents have vastly different priorities. Conservative screaming about  wokeness is a substitute for the old priorities of school vouchers and weakening of public education. Polls show that parents don’t agree.

9-year-old Black prodigy has already begun college, but schools often fail to recognize highly talented Black students: Anti-Black bias and lack of teacher referrals are keeping Black students out of gifted school programs, a scholar suggests. The latest example is David Balogun, a 9-year-old Pennsylvania boy who recently became the second-youngest person to graduate from high school, which he did after taking classes remotely. David, whose parents own and run a psychiatric clinic, has also already begun taking courses at a community college.

A Bus-Sized Robot Will Soon Be Mining the Ocean Floor: Miners plan to use massive, robotic machines that operate like super-charged vacuum cleaners. Once lowered thousands of feet to the ocean floor, they begin sucking up precious minerals, as well as the top 5-30 centimeters of the seafloor and any marine life that gets in the way. The process has been likened to clearcutting a forest and then siphoning off all the nutrient-rich soil. Even worse, the thick layer of ocean floor that the mining machines would suck up and pump out would create a massive plume of debris, similar to an underwater sandstorm, that could harm life for hundreds of miles in every direction.

In recent years, the climate impact of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has gotten increasing attention. It’s the main component of fracked gas and a byproduct of oil, and can leak into the atmosphere at various points in the production and transportation of these fossil fuels. Growing body of research suggests offshore oil’s methane pollution is underestimated. Previous efforts to regulate offshore methane emissions stalled, despite role in helicopter crashes.

Video footage from a deep-sea mining test, showing sediment discharging into the ocean, has raised fresh questions about the largely untested nature of the industry, and the possible harms it could do to ecosystems as companies push to begin full-scale exploration of the ocean floor as early as this year.

Climate change makes its presence felt in the Amazon’s shrinking fish: Studies show that the effects of climate change can already be seen in Amazonian fish, which are growing smaller and less abundant in wetlands and streams; female fish are also reproducing at a younger age. What is REACH? In the waning days of the Trump Administration, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) launched a pilot program called Medicare Direct Contracting. This under-the-radar program invited third-party middlemen to “manage” the care of Traditional Medicare beneficiaries. It also created a financial incentive for these middlemen to frustrate patients and deny medically necessary care. Thanks to the efforts of thousands of activists, Direct Contracting became thoroughly discredited and the Biden Administration was pressured to address the program. Unfortunately, their response was to simply rebrand Direct Contracting as Medicare REACH, a program that retains the worst elements of its predecessor and in some cases is even more generous to industry. Pfizer Hiking Covid Vaccine Prices Against Weaker Demand Speaks Volumes About U.S. Healthcare
As the U.S. plans to relinquish its role as the predominant purchaser of the Covid-19 vaccine to the commercial sector, vaccine manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer have announced plans to hike the price of the vaccine by over 400 percent. The decision would increase the price from $26 to $110-130 per dose, despite it costing only $2.85 to produce. Pfizer and Moderna made record-breaking profits from the Covid-19 vaccine, but taxpayers funded the development of the Covid-19 vaccines in 2020 through Operation Warp Speed and the CARES Act. The new total for wrongful payments is nearly $30 billion higher than a previous rough estimate of $163 billion. The updated number is based on applying the Labor Department’s latest estimate of the improper payment rate for the unemployment insurance program overall — 21.52%, up from 18.71% last year — to the $888 billion in total federal and state unemployment benefits paid during the pandemic.

Podcast: Moths vs. mines in Ecuador’s astounding biodiversity hotspot: The Intag Valley in the tropical Andes region of Ecuador is among the world’s most biodiverse places in the world, with more than half of its species found nowhere else. This rich cloud forest has also been targeted by mining companies seeking its vast mineral resources, like copper.  Local communities have been organizing to protect the region from such threats for decades, in what has become the longest-continuing resistance to mining in Latin America.

A solution to the climate crisis: mining the moon, researchers say: Astrophysicists propose geoengineering solution to climate warming, although skeptics still urge ‘massive’ fossil fuel cutbacks. Proponents of a “moonshot” idea to deal with global heating have been handed a new, very literal, interpretation by researchers who have proposed firing plumes of moon dust from a gun into space in order to deflect the sun’s rays away from Earth.

State Dept Outlines What Was Found on the Downed Spy Balloon: Its features indicate that it could collect communications and “operate multiple active intelligence collection sensors.”  The balloon, recovered off the coast of South Carolina, had “multiple antennas” and other components “clearly for intelligence surveillance,” a State Department spokesperson said Thursday. The antennas were likely capable of collecting and geo-locating communications, they said. The balloon also had solar panels that generated enough power to “operate multiple active intelligence collection sensors.” And the balloon’s manufacturer appears to have a direct relationship with China’s military.

Border chief: Mexican cartels use drones to identify law enforcement locations: In the past year, there have been more than 10,000 drone incursions flown by Mexican cartels operating in Mexico and in Texas in the Rio Grande Valley Sector of south Texas, Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Gloria Chavez testified Tuesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. The cartels are using the drones to identify where state and federal law enforcement officers are to avoid them and engage in criminal activity, she explained.

Border chief: Majority illegally entering Tucson Sector are single military age men: What’s portrayed on national television about large family groups with small children claiming asylum at the southern border isn’t what’s happening in the Tucson Sector of Arizona, Border Patrol Chief John Modlin testified on Tuesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. “The most notable factor that sets Tucson apart from the rest of the southwest border is the migrant demographic. It is not what you see on the news,” he said.

Border patrol presentation reveals plan to release illegal crossers en masse into U.S. communities: Roughly six weeks before testifying Tuesday before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Chief Border Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez held a meeting with local law enforcement in Weslaco, Texas, describing the administration’s plan to release en masse illegal foreign nationals into the U.S. when Title 42 ended.

Lack of border security is impacting local Arizona law enforcement: As a former law enforcement officer from Southern Arizona, I have seen first-hand the direct impact failed border policies have on local communities and police departments: Due to lack of federal resources and policy changes made by the Biden administration, Border Patrol agents have been pulled away from the line of defense where they would normally be interdicting cartel operatives and smugglers, to instead process foreign nationals. As a result, local police agencies are engaging in more drug interdiction cases on top of their normal caseload.

Deep Seabed Mining Plans Pit Renewable Energy Demand Against Ocean Life in a Largely Unexplored Frontier
As companies race to expand renewable energy and the batteries to store it, finding sufficient amounts of rare earth metals to build the technology is no easy feat. That’s leading mining companies to take a closer look at a largely unexplored frontier – the deep ocean seabed. A wealth of these metals can be found in manganese nodules that look like cobblestones scattered across wide areas of deep ocean seabed. But the fragile ecosystems deep in the oceans are little understood, and the mining codes to sustainably mine these areas are in their infancy.

‘Plant A Tree For Me’: Leonard Peltier reflects on hitting 48 years in prison; “The United States has kept me locked up because I am American Indian,” said the ailing Indigenous rights activist who Biden could free, but hasn’t: Monday marks 48 years in prison for Leonard Peltier, the Indigenous rights activist who the U.S. government put behind bars after a trial riddled with misconduct and lies, and who definitely doesn’t belong there. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office made a fall guy out of Peltier, now 78, when they convicted him of murdering two FBI agents during a 1975 shootout on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. California Loses on Medical Censorship:  The law’s goal is to enforce a public-health orthodoxy among doctors and silence dissenters. Decisions by CVS and Optum Panicked Thousands of Their Sickest Patients: Many of the patients left in the lurch have life-threatening digestive disorders that render them unable to eat or drink. They depend on parenteral nutrition, or PN, in which amino acids, sugars, fats, vitamins, and electrolytes are pumped, in most cases, through a specialized catheter directly into a large vein near the heart.

There Is Nowhere Safe When You’re Black; From the formation of America to the killing of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police, Black bodies have never been safe: For all the progress on civil rights made in the last couple of generations, Black people apprehended by law enforcement in 2023 have no real expectations of safety. When they get stopped by police for any reason, there are no reliable channels of reason and appeal. As the recent tragic, totally unnecessary death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, proves, again, Black people aren’t safe anywhere.

Colorado River crisis so severe lakes Mead and Powell are unlikely to refill in our lifetimes: Lake Mead, located on the Arizona-Nevada border and held back by Hoover Dam, filled in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2000, it was nearly full and lapping at the spillway gates. But the megadrought over the last 23 years, the most severe in centuries, has worsened the water deficit and left Lake Mead about 70% empty. Upstream, Lake Powell has declined to just 23% of full capacity and is approaching a point where Glen Canyon Dam would no longer generate power.

“Acute Psychosis after COVID-19 Vaccination”: Croatian Study’s Alert relaunched by US MD McCullough. NotInvisible: Why are Native American women vanishing? Ashley’s disappearance is one small chapter in the unsettling story of missing and murdered Native American women and girls. No one knows precisely how many there are because some cases go unreported, others aren’t documented thoroughly and there isn’t a specific government database tracking these cases. But one U.S. senator with victims in her home state calls this an epidemic, a long-standing problem linked to inadequate resources, outright indifference and a confusing jurisdictional maze. Now, in the era of #MeToo, this issue is gaining political traction as an expanding activist movement focuses on Native women, a population known to experience some of the nation’s highest rates of murder, sexual violence and domestic abuse.

Russia is beginning to tear at the fabric of New START. It allowed Washington and Moscow to behave predictably, but that most valuable feature is now in jeopardy.     The US has just declared Russia to be in non-compliance with the New Start treaty, the last remaining legally binding measure between the two countries to control nuclear arms. The issues are straightforward: Washington has asked to restore on-site inspections, which both sides suspended during the pandemic, and requested a meeting of the treaty’s implementation body. Moscow has refused on both counts.

“US Don’t Have the Missiles to Stop China”: Warning by the Pentagon’s Warmonger Friend “Defense One.” The war in Ukraine made plain several well-known challenges with precision weapons: they are expensive, rely on complicated supply chains, and take time to build. With Russia’s invasion stretching into its second year and military leaders warning of a looming war with China, analysts, Congress, and defense officials are all arguing for dramatically increased spending on the sophisticated long-range missiles needed for war in the Indo-Pacific. If we want companies to stop burning fossil fuel, why are we paying them for it? Robobees Are Back, This Time In The Image Of A “Fairy” That “Could Help Save The Planet”: The original Robobee concept relied purely on solar power, new research is focusing on harnessing the power of both wind and light (even laser and LED) with a “fairy” robotic pollinator that was also inspired by dandelion seeds.  Researchers in Finland say these dandelion-inspired smart robots could help save the environment, taking over for pollinators (like bees) who are disappearing from nature. Responsive polymer allows the creation of artificial, autonomously operating structures. In dark and calm weather, the fairy stays still. Tyre Nichols’ death underscores the troubled history of specialized police units: The officers charged in the murder of a Black man in Memphis, Tenn., were part of the elite SCORPION squad. Such units have an ugly history. Memphis Police Department’s SCORPION team. A rather tortured acronym for “Street Crimes Operation to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods,” SCORPION is a crime suppression unit – that is, officers detailed specifically to prevent, detect and interrupt violent crime by proactively using stops, frisks, searches and arrests. Such specialized units are common in forces across the U.S. and tend to rely on aggressive policing tactics.

The plant’s three operational “trains,” which came online in 2019, produce 16.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) per year for export to hungry markets in Europe, Asia, and other international destinations. There are plans to add seven smaller trains at the facility, equivalent to another 11 million tons of capacity.

Public lands are not neutral. We must grapple with their racist roots: Analysis of data from the U.S. Forest Service shows that white people make up 95% of the visitors to national forests (77% to national parks), despite many forests being located near communities where people belonging to minorities are the majority. On the managing side of the equation, things are not too different: at almost every meeting or excursion I attend for my job, I am the only Latine person represented and very rarely are there people of color present. The people driving the decisions in the environmental movement, especially around nature conservation, are mostly white and male.

At least 11 people were injured in a drive-by shooting in Florida minutes after a school bus dropped kids off at home. The shooting occurred as Florida Republicans are set to pass a bill legalizing concealed carry without a permit. “We have reason to believe that this was a targeted event, that this was not a random act,” police said. “I was hoping it was firecrackers but I didn’t see any smoke,” one mother told Fox 35 Orlando. “It’s just so surreal; it’s scary. Everybody’s kids just got off the bus. Kids were still walking home right here. So it’s a blessing nobody’s kids got hurt.”

Can Medicare Advantage Be Contained? The Biden administration is increasing audits of abuses, a good start, but not enough. Medicare Advantage is a lucrative private insurance product masquerading as part of Medicare. It’s actually an HMO for seniors, offered by every major insurance company, using the trusted Medicare brand and relying on Medicare payments. By the end of this year, more than half of all people enrolled in Medicare will be in Medicare Advantage.

Amid Fears of Contamination, Japan Will Soon Dump Treated Water from Fukushima Nuclear Plant into the Pacific: The government said it is the best way to deal with tritium and trace amounts of other radionuclides in the water. “Releasing the treated water into the sea is a realistic solution,” Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said at a Cabinet meeting endorsing the plan. “We will do our utmost to keep the water far above safety standards.” A Japanese government official later clarified that details of the release need to be worked out and approved. 25 GOP governors ask Biden administration to hit pause on broader clean water rule: Twenty-five Republican governors oppose a revised federal rule regulating U.S. waterways, citing uncertainty from an undecided U.S. Supreme Court case related to the rule. The governors sent a letter to the Biden administration on Monday asking it to delay the implementation of the revised Waters of the United States rule since the U.S. Supreme Court is currently considering Sackett v. A Federal Judge has blocked California law that would punish doctors for providing treatment or advice that promotes COVID “misinformation.” Bill Gates made millions off the COVID vaccine, admitted that the vaccine is ineffective against preventing transmission, providing long-term protection, and aligning with rapidly developing variants. Several analysts and commentators were critical of Gates, not due to disagreement with the statements he made in Australia. They argued that he had previously heavily invested in mRNA vaccines at the same time he encouraged a global COVID-19 vaccination campaign and supported mandatory vaccination.

We are overcounting covid deaths and hospitalizations. That’s a problem: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States is experiencing around 400 covid deaths every day. At that rate, there would be nearly 150,000 deaths a year. But are these Americans dying from covid or with covid? The Debt Ceiling Benefits the Rich and Powerful, Says Economist Richard Wolff: In addition to reaping the benefits of tax cuts, corporations and the wealthy can become lenders to the U.S. government. House Republicans are pushing for major spending cuts as part of any deal to raise the federal government’s $31.4 trillion borrowing limit. “It’s 99% theatrics,” says Wolff, professor emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a visiting professor in the Graduate Program in International Affairs of The New School. Revealed: how US transition to electric cars threatens environmental havoc: If Americans continue to depend on cars at the current rate, by 2050 the US alone would need triple the amount of lithium currently produced for the entire global market, which would have dire consequences for water and food supplies, biodiversity, and Indigenous rights. Lithium mining is, like all mining, environmentally and socially harmful. More than half the current lithium production, which is very water intensive, takes place in regions blighted by water shortages that are likely to get worse due to global heating.

BP Says Ukraine War and IRA Could Spur Energy Transition: When Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to gas shortages and soaring prices, it was used by both governments and fossil fuel companies to justify more oil, gas and coal development. However, one oil major predicts the longer-term consequence of the invasion will be to speed the transition to renewable energy. “The increased focus on energy security as a result of the Russia-Ukraine war has the potential to accelerate the energy transition as countries seek to increase access to domestically produced energy, much of which is likely to come from renewables and other non-fossil fuels.”

The Medics Are Also to Blame for Tyre Nichols’ Death: As a former paramedic of 25 years, an EMS educator and author, and a former law enforcement officer, I see these cases through a different lens than most. When looking at these videos, as difficult as it is, I try to look past the violence and assess the actions of the first responders that did not intercede to prevent the act from occurring. The case of Tyre Nichols is rife with instances of both EMS and police failing to attempt to save the dying man’s life. The video shows several figures off to the side for long stretches, not actively engaging, simply watching, meandering and occasionally talking with the victim who is clearly in distress.
