Pfizer Hiking Covid Vaccine Prices Against Weaker Demand Speaks Volumes About U.S. Healthcare
As the U.S. plans to relinquish its role as the predominant purchaser of the Covid-19 vaccine to the commercial sector, vaccine manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer have announced plans to hike the price of the vaccine by over 400 percent. The decision would increase the price from $26 to $110-130 per dose, despite it costing only $2.85 to produce. Pfizer and Moderna made record-breaking profits from the Covid-19 vaccine, but taxpayers funded the development of the Covid-19 vaccines in 2020 through Operation Warp Speed and the CARES Act. The new total for wrongful payments is nearly $30 billion higher than a previous rough estimate of $163 billion. The updated number is based on applying the Labor Department’s latest estimate of the improper payment rate for the unemployment insurance program overall — 21.52%, up from 18.71% last year — to the $888 billion in total federal and state unemployment benefits paid during the pandemic.

State Dept Outlines What Was Found on the Downed Spy Balloon: Its features indicate that it could collect communications and “operate multiple active intelligence collection sensors.” The balloon, recovered off the coast of South Carolina, had “multiple antennas” and other components “clearly for intelligence surveillance,” a State Department spokesperson said Thursday. The antennas were likely capable of collecting and geo-locating communications, they said. The balloon also had solar panels that generated enough power to “operate multiple active intelligence collection sensors.” And the balloon’s manufacturer appears to have a direct relationship with China’s military.
