Greg Abbott is inciting a conflict between Border Patrol and the state’s National Guard that is inching closer and closer toward a violent clash between armed agents of state and federal law enforcement https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2024/01/supreme-court-texas-border-patrol-standoff.html?pay=1706535679102&support_journalism=please__;!!On18fmf1aQ!yVvj-sbORdn3xlC10UgCSPAhYTYM3CqKXFjZZY_sd40ojpXuF8tfScJ3c7R3me2IUHhcFfNl50vrOghg7ckz97c9sW_6WsU0$

The Texas GOP’s border crisis plan includes secession, surrender and stunts instead of solutions: Republican leaders use immigration to stoke anger and avoid solving the crisis.

The Spooky Blackout of Border News: You would have to be blind not to see what is happening here. By forcing open the border and overriding states’ rights, the Biden administration is acting like an agent of chaos, tossing out border security to recruit voters in an election it fears it will lose, and thus cementing a blue majority for the future.

What Happens If Greg Abbott Expands Texas State Guard? As the debate continues, Daniel Miller, president of the Texas Nationalist Movement, which campaigns for the Lone Star State to declare independence from the U.S., suggested that Abbott should expand the powers of the TXSG, the volunteer military agency that provides response during incidents such as the aftermath of a natural disaster.

Biden Threatens Immediate Action to ‘Shut Down’ US-Mexico Border if Congress Approves Bipartisan Proposal: Bidding to salvage a border deal in Congress that also would unlock money for Ukraine, President Joe Biden offered fresh assurances Saturday night that he would be willing to close the U.S.-Mexico border if lawmakers would only send him a bill to sign.

California Sees Surge in Chinese Migrants: U.S. encounters of Chinese nationals at California border hit all-time high. The U.S. Border Patrol had more than 6,000 encounters along California’s border with citizens of the People’s Republic of China in December 2023. Chinese immigrants attempting to come into the United States through Mexico are at their highest levels in a decade, with many of them finding refuge in California.

Did Biden intentionally cause the border crisis? The House Judiciary Committee issued a report recently on the Biden administration’s record-breaking undocumented immigrant apprehensions and releases at the border, and its refusal to enforce the immigration laws in the interior of the country. The report questions whether the administration intentionally caused the border crisis. It certainly does seem to be intentional.

Senate GOP pleads with Trump not to kill Ukraine-border security deal: One of the key Senate negotiators on a proposal to tighten border security said Sunday that an agreement has been reached, but intensifying opposition from former president Donald Trump and some Republicans could doom any bill.

D.C. students push for ‘Green New Deal for Schools’: The D.C. State Board of Education adopted the “Green New Deal for Schools,” making it the second school board in the nation to support changes such as adopting more clean infrastructure, developing new curriculums, introducing pathways to green jobs in high school and creating climate disaster plans, students said.

# Energy / Pipelines / Mining / Chemicals Transport Of Vinyl Chloride Puts Millions at Risk: Millions of Americans face risk of a toxic ‘bomb train.’ In some spots along the path the chemicals are transported, people of color make up the largest group at risk. A new report found that at any given moment, more than three million people are unknowingly at risk as trains full of vinyl chloride move between OxyVinyl facilities in Texas and New Jersey.

# Environment / Climate / Chemicals / Infrastructure Texas Is Already Running Out of Water: Parts of the state are starting the year with low reserves. With light winter rains failing to replenish supply and a scorching summer predicted, key areas may be pushed to the brink. Two consecutive summers of brutal heat and drought have left some parts of Texas with notably low water supplies going into 2024. A wet year or a well-placed hurricane could quickly pull these regions back from the brink. But winter rains have disappointed so far.

“Doomsday Clock” kept at 90 seconds to midnight for 2024, which they said reflected “the continued state of unprecedented danger the world faces.” As the Doomsday Clock” ticks closer to midnight, global tensions and nuclear threats intensify. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, stewards of the Doomsday Clock, emphasized in their announcement that the Clock could be turned back, but governments and people needed to take urgent action.

A federal appeals court recently ruled that a lawsuit filed by the Mexican government against U.S. gun manufacturers can move forward. The Mexican government is claiming U.S. gun manufacturers are contributing to the illicit flow of firearms into Mexico.

Civil War Scholars Agree: 14th Amendment Disqualifies Trump: Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which bars former civilian or military officials from holding office if they “shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the United States government. The provision has mostly laid dormant since the Reconstruction Era. But Trump’s federal and state indictments in the Jan. 6 insurrection have already led to efforts to bump him off the ballot in key states.

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment: No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State

Disqualification from Public Office Under the 14th Amendment: The Fourteenth Amendment is better known for protecting civil rights. It grants citizenship to all people born in the United States, guarantees equal protection of privileges and immunities of citizens, and bolsters the importance of due process. But the events of January 6th brought the disqualification clause into the spotlight.

While Dismissing ICJ Genocide Finding, US Cuts UNRWA Funds Over Israeli Allegations: “How has the U.S. reacted to these allegations against UNRWA? It suspended funding,” said one British expert. “How has the U.S. reacted to the International Court of Justice ruling that there are plausible grounds that Israel is committing genocide? Nothing.”The Israeli government’s allegations that 12 employees of the United Nations Palestinian refugees agency were involved in Hamas’ October 7 attack pushed the United States to promptly halt funding for the organization on Friday

Why the ICJ Ruling Misses the Mark: Mitigating Civilian Harm With An Enemy Engaged in Human Shielding:  International Court of Justice ordered provisional measures against Israel in response to a complaint brought by South Africa under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. While the ruling does not require Israel to desist from further military operations in Gaza, Israel is admonished to adhere closely to its obligations under the treaty, as well as to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

ICJ’s Gaza decision shores up rules-based order and puts west to test: UN court’s ruling is devastating for Israel and awkward for allies such as the UK and US, which belittled South Africa’s case

US Hawks Demand War With Iran After Attack on American Troops in Jordan: Warhawks in the United States wasted no time agitating for direct military conflict with Iran after a drone attack on a military base just inside Jordan’s border with Syria on Sunday killed three American troops and injured dozens more. “The only answer to these attacks must be devastating military retaliation against Iran’s terrorist forces, both in Iran and across the Middle East,” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), a longtime supporter of war with Iran. “Anything less will confirm Joe Biden as a coward unworthy of being commander-in-chief.”

25 States Join Texas in Fight Against Federal Government:  What to know. Through the border security initiative Operation Lone Star, Texas has implemented physical barriers barring both immigrants and federal agents from accessing the border, raising legal disputes.

America Is Not a Democracy: The movement to save democracy from threats is too quick to overlook the problems that have been present since the founding. The 2024 election is already being pitched not as a choice about taxes or health care or social policy, but a final test of whether we will have a republic or a dictatorship.

Politico’s Hit Job on U.S. Trade Rep Katherine Tai: A complex tug-of-war has been happening over the direction of Biden’s trade policy. Politico serves as a handy receptacle for Tai’s enemies to paint Tai as the problem. The piece goes on; “She’s really tough on people, and she hasn’t figured out a way to have relationships in other parts of the administration, which is how you do your job,” said one official familiar with the staffing issues. “The morale [problem] is more about that than anything else. Other agencies aren’t having these kinds of departures.”
