Oil prospecting and man-made noise is freaking out narwhals: Their heart rate drops and their breathing changes as they try to escape the noise. One activity expected to cause disturbance to narwhals (and pretty much every other creature in the Arctic) is drilling for fossil fuels. If we do decide to drill for fossil fuels in the Arctic, it could be catastrophic to the animals living there, but even before that happens, narwhals may have a great deal to suffer.

20 states sue Biden administration over ‘illegal visa system’: Twenty states led by Texas sued the Biden administration Tuesday over another immigration policy they argue is illegal. Last month, the administration said the U.S. will let up to 360,000 people per year enter the country from four countries, if they apply from their home countries, pass a background check and prove they have a financial supporter in the U.S. If they’re approved, they can stay in the country for up to two years and get a work permit. Once in the country, they would be able to request asylum.

Republicans’ plans to slash Social Security and Medicare are becoming clearer: ‘We have no choice but to make hard decisions’: House Republicans have alluded to cuts they want to make to the federal budget for months. They’re becoming more explicit about those cuts involving Medicare and Social Security funds. They’ve indicated that they’re willing to leverage raising the debt ceiling to secure cuts. Not raising the ceiling could spell financial disaster. Republicans have proposed converting Medicaid and Affordable Care Act subsidies to block grants, which would cut spending by $3.6 trillion over 10 years.

‘The Whale’ is a horror film that taps into our fear of fatness: In my research on fat characters in popular culture, I point out how the fat character usually must lose weight in order to gain acceptance or to be loved. This movie was not a melodrama, nor an uplifting tale about redemption; “The Whale” is a body horror film that exploits the fear and disgust people feel toward fatness. Film critic Robin Wood famously argued that “the true subject of the horror genre is the struggle for recognition of all that our civilization represses and oppresses.”

People With HIV Are Still Being Criminalized in 25 States: In some states, consensual sex for people with HIV can end in a prison sentence or being registered as a sex offender. Robert Suttle’s life was upended. The 30-year-old had been working as an assistant law clerk at the Second Circuit Court of Appeal in Shreveport, Louisiana, when police arrested him in front of his colleagues. It didn’t matter that Suttle, who had learned about his HIV status several years earlier, had HIV, not AIDS. It didn’t matter that he had been receiving medical care since he first learned his diagnosis and that he said he had disclosed his status. No one asked about whether his viral load was undetectable, which would prevent HIV transmission. It did not matter that, by 2008, HIV and AIDS were no longer considered the death sentence that they had been during the 1980s.

The FDA may simplify COVID vaccines to a single annual shot for many people: The annual shots could be designed to match whatever variant of COVID is currently circulating, much in the same way a new flu vaccine is formulated every year. How Pharmaceuticals Mask Health and Social Inequity: Medications, like all interventions, shape the ways in which physicians see disease, provide care, define successful outcomes, and organize health care systems. Epistemic Corruption, the Pharmaceutical Industry, and the Body of Medical Science: When a knowledge system importantly loses integrity, ceasing to provide the kinds of trusted knowledge expected of it, we label this epistemic corruption. Epistemic corruption occurs because the system has been co-opted for interests at odds with some of the central goals thought to lie behind it. Glyphosate yet again is linked to cancer in people exposed to its use: You might have never heard of glyphosate before, but you probably have some in your garage or basement. It’s the active ingredient in herbicides and weed killers, and now scientists in the US have found that people exposed to it have biomarkers (a naturally occurring molecule or gene found in body fluids or tissues) linked to the development of cancer and other diseases.

Congress Should Investigate AARP: Why would an organization that claims to advocate for seniors support a bill that raided nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars from Medicare? Donald Trump, Ever the voice of caution, to GOP: Don’t touch Medicare or Social Security in debt ceiling fight. The ex-president has long viewed entitlement reform as a political loser. But his timing, now, is notable. One reason fiscal conservatives could support toothless commissions to take a gander at Social Security and Medicare is that their alternative plan, actually holding the global economy hostage in order to extract real cuts to seniors’ health care and income would be one of the dumbest political moves in history.

Will Biden Save Israel From Its Worst Instincts? The U.S. has only days to act before Netanyahu destroys the Israeli High Court. The short story: An ultranationalist, ultra-Orthodox government, formed after the Netanyahu camp won election by the tiniest sliver of votes (roughly 30,000 out of some 4.7 million), is driving a power grab that the other half of voters view not only as corrupt but also as threatening their own civil rights. That’s why a 5,000-person anti-government demonstration grew to 80,000 over the weekend.

They have presided over the worst border crisis we’ve seen in decades and more illegal immigration than any administration  in recent history. “The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,
begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing
evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar,
but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through
violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In
fact, violence merely increases hate. Darkness cannot drive out
darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate;
only love can do that.”

Martin Luther King Jr., quote from his 1967 book
Where Do We Go From Here?

The choice should be clear: As the largest hospital system in America, with nearly $60 billion in annual revenue and 180+ hospitals across the country, you’d think HCA Healthcare would know what they’re doing, right?
